Dance Scapes - Somatic Practice with Rosie Perks

Dance Scapes - Somatic Practice with Rosie Perks Movement Medicine®, Internal Family Systems & Processwork. Dance Scapes is the umbrella for workshops, courses and individual sessions with Rosie Perks.

Somatic practice that weaves the intelligence of the moving body with the inclusivity and kindness of systemic understanding. Dance as a practice is a highly efficient tool for processing our experiences, traversing our emotions, and getting to know ourselves better. Dance Scapes with Rosie integrates the somatic practice of Movement Medicine® with Internal Family Systems, Processwork, trauma awa

reness and systemic understanding. Movement Medicine unites the liberation of free dance with the awareness of mindfulness, the depth of therapeutic understanding and intelligence of shamanic practice. This is supported by the kindness and inclusivity of IFS and Processwork practices that help us to listen to our internal system and how this relates to external systems. Creating a trauma informed, nervous system aware environment that supports
us to explore our humanity and emotional terrain with courage, compassion and curiosity. This is somatic practice for the times we live in, rooted in our connection to the natural world and the cycles of life. Returning us time and again to the home inside our hearts, the nourishment of our bodies in motion and the love of a dancing village.

New life is here - SO here!
I have been in a place of such desolation and lostness without our beloved Sam dog. I’m still with the heartbreak, the missing him and weirdness of him not being here. I talk to him daily, see him in all the familiar places he loved and wish he was still with us.

Living life without a canine companion at my side is not something I’m very interested in doing. So I’m glad for the sunrise that has come into our lives in the form of Alba. This 4.5 month old beauty is now a big part of our lives, keeping us on our toes in every way - bringing sunshine and incredibly sharp teeth. We are on a very steep learning curve - life has been fully puppy-jacked :)

And … I’m loving it and all the wolf-dog learning that she brings.

I’m so appreciating how much intelligence there is out there and how understandings about what dogs need have developed in recent years - it feels similar to all the neurological and nervous system updates we’ve had for humans over the past decade. Information that verifies what those of us that have danced for years know through experience. The undeniable goodness of movement, the intelligence of the body in motion and what gets restored for us humans in the ground of connection to our bodies, our hearts and each other.

I'm now finding the same level of understanding for dog development - it's so good for me. In both places what I/we have always known to be true through perception and instinct are being affirmed by research and a broader awareness. What I’m touched by most often with Alba is the similarity of her needs and our young human needs - the mammalian way of growing with safety at our base - embedded through attunement, connection, structure and responsiveness - so clear. And then of course the expression of that can be very different and at times overwhelming, requiring us to pay attention in a particular way - as she is a dog, not a human!

Not sure what dear Sam would make of Alba’s full power puppy ways. But for me life feels possible again - thank goodness for dogs!

I’m feeling well and content in my work at the moment. I have a sense of life being generative, of flow and possibility. The Momentum Programme that has grown with an amazing team supporting me and bringing their own particular creative genius to the process, has gathered its own momentum that is both miraculous and affirming. I find myself amazed and slightly disbelieving here, yet at the same time it also feels coherent and normal. Our team has expanded to include Natalia a fine dancer who was part of the 2025 programme, she has stepped up to support us in the process of accessing bursary funding. For those that Momentum would really support but can’t afford to fully fund it themselves. She has managed to access some which is incredibly exciting. Currently this is for frontline practitioners and community workers based in Devon. So if that’s you and Momentum is calling you then please get in touch to apply and register for a place on Momentum.

With this there’s a sense of a growing circle of goodness and awareness of this work and how this particular blend of modalities is so useful for our humanity and so good for our souls. There are lots of dancers planning to join us from all sorts of backgrounds, some needing bursary support, some ready and able to dive in and fund themselves. There are even four participants from the last program wishing to join us again - for me that is the biggest accolade to how this work can grow us. The genesis of Momentum is coming into its own being, it no longer feels like mine alone - it has gathered its own ‘momentum’. So a big shout out to this yes from life and a curiosity as to where it will take us all - and who will be with us in April when the programme begins. Excited and glad.`

In this weave of Movement Medicine and Internal Family Systems we get to land fully in the dance and our awake moving bodies. From here we encourage ones inside, that are ready, to come and dance with us, giving them space, movement, love and alongsidedness. If there are burdens they are carrying that they are ready compost we give them space and support to do this. Making room to embody and inhabit a more accurate truth, of who these ones in us really are, and how they might live in this world without this weight. There is plenty of welcome for whoever shows up, sometimes these places in us simply wish to come and dance. To be heard, understood and fully included and don’t need anything more than that.

Every time I witness a room of dancers moving through this process of radical inclusion, with a companion supporting them, the spirit of the dance and the energy of self that infuse the room. It’s a remarkable thing to behold how quickly places settle, how space gets made and how touchingly parts get included. When I see this, I feel a soul dream in me comes into this reality and prayers I didn’t realise I have been making get answered. Parts of me can’t believe the miracle of it and other places in me feel like it’s absolutely normal and this is life as I wish to live it.

Do come join us in this dance!

I’m very happy to introduce you to this latest workshop. This weekend offers an introduction to the Momentum Programme should you want one. CULTIVATE is also a great weekend to come to in its own right , I’m glad for it and for the team from momentum that will be supporting it.

GROWING AGENCY & UNDERSTANDING
CULTIVATE is an invitation to till the soil of your somatic intelligence and dancing self, to deepen your understanding of how your system communicates within and beyond you.

Weaving Internal Family Systems (IFS) with Movement Medicine, we grow a particular somatic and systemic wisdom that nurtures kindness and understanding alongside agency and freedom of expression. Dancing to surrender ourselves to the intelligence of our awake moving bodies, allowing the self energy of the spirit of the dance to expand and nourish us.
We will then move into embodied IFS practice, to support places in our systems to grow with choice, capacity and courage.

Drawing on the resource of our dancing village to collectively cultivate ease and connection over activation and separation. Through giving space and permission for the aliveness of our own nature while tending to the living landscape of life around and between us.

This is an opportunity to be genuinely nourished, by movement, by music, by the simple and profound experience of being in good company. So that when we return to our lives, we carry with us a little more resilience, a little more capacity, a little more of ourselves.

SHOWING UP
Something I keep catching myself in: a quiet sense that people are doing me a favour by choosing to dance with me. That I owe them something extra. That my showing up somehow doesn't quite count as enough.

I'm with how much that costs. And how much it isn't true.

What beginning to learn is that me showing up is the relational offering. People don't need anything more from me than that. And I don't need anything more from them than their showing up, being themselves, sharing themselves with me and the other dancers.

Yes, there are transactions that make this function in the world we live in. And yet the fundamental thing that's happening is relational and vital.

I make myself available. In return, something alive happens between us.

I'm practising remembering that. Practising arriving as someone who knows they're good for the people they work with. Not because I've earned it in that particular moment, but because showing up, genuinely and fully, is already the thing. Already enough.

SAM
Our beloved dog died very recently. Unexpectedly he went into kidney failure, and we had to make that hardest of choices to end his suffering. I'm sure anyone who has loved an animal companion and had to make this choice understands that particular heart-wrenching ask of us.

So I've been in my own dance of losing ground. His desolation of absence. His alongsidedness that kept me well in my everyday life, one that brought a sense of enoughness to me.

I've been giving myself time to really be with what it was like with Sam. What he brought me, what I brought him, what our companionship was like and why it was, and is, so precious to me.

His boisterous joy for life. His soft warm love. His clear edges. How he never held back from being himself with me. How available and alive it was between us.

What's strongest in me right now is how I always knew I was good for him. And he always knew he was good for me. That was just there, in all our rest and play together, no question, no performance, no transaction needed.

He held a kind of enoughness in me that I'm trying to learn how to hold for myself.
I'm still finding my ground. But I'm taking him with me into it.

ENOUGH-NESS
I've been noticing lately, when I teach, how often I find myself encouraging dancers to be with their sense of already being enough, and to dance from there.

I'm aware it comes from my own places where I believe I need to be more than I am. Better than I am. Deliver something cleverer.

I'm getting more curious about how hard it is to allow myself to move in the world from a sense of my goodness, my vitality, my wellness - rather than the well-trodden path of not enough, reaching for, filling the gaps.

What would life be like if I could really interact from a place of my goodness? If I was to believe that what I bring is already enough, who I am is already enough. Then all I have to do is be generous and share that with the people I work with and meet in my daily life.

That makes me widen my wondering. What would our world be like if we all interacted with each other from a sense of our goodness? Kindly, generously sharing that - rather than communicating from our lack, our fear of being wrong, of not being enough, of not being received.

For me, coming from the place of not enough instantly disables me. Limits me. Gives me less space to be curious, to offer, to notice and respond to what shows up in return.

The other place opens a door to real reciprocity. I offer, it's received, I receive back, I offer back, the infinity loop. Rather than the linear, transactional understanding of a one-way interaction.

That's the world I want to live in, and the dance I want to be part of.

What becomes possible
When we bring our full humanity into relationship with the Dance — all the beautiful and difficult parts — something shifts.

Understandings arrive. A little more space opens up. Space to be human with ourselves, with each other, and in the world.

And when we step back out into our lives, we often find a little more capacity to meet both the goodness that's available to us and the places where we can't quite feel it yet - with more resilience, more grace.

That's what we come together for. 💛

The place we dance from
There's a place we can dance from that holds us with kindness, compassion, openness, and a lightness of touch — gentle enough to meet even the strongest, most tender places inside us.

In IFS it's called Self energy. In some practices, Presence. In Movement Medicine, the Wise Elder within.

Whatever name we give it, when we dance from this place, we open the door to the parts of us that are struggling, hurting, or trying to bring something important into the world — and we meet them with care.

The moving body becomes a safe vessel for the heart. 🙏
