Capturing summer in a bottle 🌼🍋

Every June, I look forward to elderflower season.

These fragrant blossoms have been used for centuries in traditional herbalism and are one of my favourite herbs to transform into a refreshing cordial.

Simply gather fresh elderflowers, infuse them l, strain, sweeten, and bottle.

Diluted with sparkling water, it's the perfect drink for warm summer days.

Have you ever made elderflower cordial before? 🌿

The herb herbalists rush to harvest every June 🌼

Elderflower (Sambucus nigra) has been used for centuries in traditional European herbalism.

Traditionally, elderflower was used to support seasonal allergies, sinus congestion, and respiratory wellness, while also being transformed into teas, cordials, and summer remedies.

Its sweet floral fragrance is one of the true signs that summer has arrived.

Heatwave herbal cooler 🌿🧊

Today I made a refreshing drink with mint, cucumber, and apple straight from the kitchen because honestly… it’s too hot for complicated recipes.

Mint is traditionally used as a cooling herb, while cucumber helps keep things fresh and hydrating during warmer weather.

Simple seasonal drinks like this are one of my favourite ways to work with herbs in everyday life.

Refreshing, herbal, and perfect for hot afternoons ☀️

POV: sometimes herbalism looks like this 🌿🍋

Fresh lemon balm picked from the garden, added to a cup, and infused into a simple tea

One of the easiest and most traditional ways to work with herbs is by drinking them as tea
slowly, consistently, and as part of everyday life rather than as a quick fix

Lemon balm has been used for centuries in herbal medicine to support the nervous system, digestion, sleep, and emotional wellbeing

Traditionally, it was valued for helping during times of stress, overwhelm, restlessness, and nervous tension, while also gently supporting digestion and bringing a sense of calm

Modern research continues to explore many of these traditional uses, particularly lemon balm’s role in relaxation, mood, and cognitive support

And honestly, sometimes herbalism begins with something as simple as this
stepping outside, picking a few fresh leaves, and making a cup of tea ✨

Lemon balm syrup from the garden 🍋🌿

Last year I gathered a handful of fresh lemon balm, chopped the leaves, covered them with around 400ml of water, and left them to infuse overnight.

The next day, I strained the liquid, added an equal amount of sugar, gently heated it, and bottled the syrup.

Lemon balm has long been valued in herbal traditions for its calming and uplifting qualities, often used to support the nervous system, digestion, and relaxation.

Its fresh citrusy flavour works beautifully in:
• teas
• sparkling drinks
• desserts
• salads
• cakes and syrups

A simple way to preserve the abundance of the garden and carry a little bit of summer forward 🌿

Lemon balm has long been associated with joy, calm, and the heart 🌿🍋

In European folklore, it was often planted near homes and monastery gardens to bring harmony, protection, and abundance

Its botanical name, Melissa, comes from the Greek word for “bee”, and the herb was traditionally believed to attract bees, symbolising vitality, sweetness, and community

In magical folklore, lemon balm was associated with:
✨ healing
✨ emotional balance
✨ love and friendship
✨ calming the spirit

It was sometimes carried or placed around the home to lift melancholy, restore energy, and create a peaceful atmosphere

Traditionally, lemon balm has also been linked to the Sun 🌞
reflecting its uplifting, warming, and heart-opening nature

A herb connected to softness rather than intensity
bringing calm without heaviness

One of the simplest ways to work with lemon balm is as a fresh tea, infused honey, syrup, or added to baths and evening rituals 🌿

Sometimes herbalism begins with something as simple as slowing down and making a cup of tea ✨Check my recent blog about Lemon Balm and my Calmness Tea
