Last week I had the unexpected pleasure of seeing Mike, one of our former members of the team who gave many years service. Mike said

"My healthcare journey started with Shepshed CFR group and now I'm a full time front line Ambulance Practitioner.
"This is all thanks to Shepshed Community Responder group, please support them for the great work they do."

Our staff and volunteers are working immensely hard to help those who are critically unwell and need our life-saving services.

Please only dial 999 in a life-threatening emergency.

Going to hospital via ambulance will not mean you’re seen any quicker when you get there, but could mean an ambulance isn’t available for someone who needs our life-saving care.

Following a grant received earlier this year, we're now looking for a location to install a new community defibrillator.

We received the grant based on a vote by the community, so we'd like to open up nominations as to where we put the new defibrillator!

Put your suggestions in the comments below 👇 we'll take a look through them and see where may work.

Ideally, we'd like it in a popular spot where there is no community defib currently available, and we're looking at somewhere in Shepshed, Loughborough or the surrounding area.

We are thrilled to share that we were awarded £1500 thanks to our incredible community and the Tesco Stronger Starts project.

You kindly voted us into first place with some fantastic other projects in the running.

The money will go to a brand new defibrillator in the area as well as keeping some of our other community defibrillators rescue ready with new pads and batteries.

Huge thanks to everyone who voted for us with the blue tokens earlier in the year!

We'd like to say a huge thank you to everyone who makes what we do possible this Volunteers' Week.

It was a pleasure to present Bill with his Coronation Medal yesterday evening. Bill is the longest serving active member of our team, with over 10 years' service volunteering for the ambulance - on top of a long and successful career as a police officer.

Thank you Bill! 👏

Seven defibs with new pads and batteries installed this evening - seeing those life-saving devices into 2026!

Our defib estate is becoming increasingly expensive to maintain as costs of replacement parts have risen dramatically - a set of pad and batteries now costs about £350 - more than double the price we paid in 2022 😔

Awesome to see our very own team member Chad featured by East Midlands Ambulance Service today!

Thanks to all our team for the time they give up to support the community 👏

Today our Holiday Hero is Chad Saunders, Community First Responder from the Shepshed CFR group. Many of our volunteers like Chad have been out and about across the festive period helping those in the community who are in need.

Chad started volunteering for EMAS in 2023.

“Alongside volunteering, I work on the Loughborough University campus for a golf club company called PING as a Research and Test Engineer. My role mainly involves developing 3D motion capture technologies to model the golf swing, understand how people interact with equipment, and drive innovation to design better golf clubs. “Growing up I did not have an interest in working in healthcare but when I was younger my friend's father had a cardiac arrest and collapsed at a family BBQ. The neighbour was a CFR and quickly came to the rescue and now the father is fully recovered and healthy. Arguably the CFR saved his life and the positive impact that one person had on my friend and the wider community has always stuck with me. “I have moved around the UK multiple times for university and work and until recently I never felt settled enough to become part of the local community. Now that I feel settled and have started volunteering I am really enjoying it.

“Being trusted by patients to help them in their hour of need is a real privilege and something I find very rewarding. One thing I didn't think about before volunteering was how much you would interact with a wide variety of cultures, ages, and backgrounds within the local community and be able to communicate, relate, and help where I can.”

Could you make a difference to your community like Chad? Why not visit the EMAS website to find out more about how you can become a volunteer. Volunteers :: East Midlands Ambulance Service (emas.nhs.uk)
