๐ What is insulin resistance and why does it matter in midlife?
As both a Diabetes Specialist Nurse and Menopause Specialist Nurse, I see first-hand how closely hormones, metabolism and long-term health are connected.
Many women tell me they are doing โall the right thingsโ but still struggling with:
โจ Weight gain, particularly around the middle
โจ Increased hunger and cravings
โจ Fatigue and low energy
โจ Brain fog and poor concentration
โจ Difficulty losing weight
For some women, insulin resistance may be playing a role.
During perimenopause and menopause, declining oestrogen levels can affect how our bodies respond to insulin, making it easier to gain weight and harder to maintain good metabolic health.
The good news? There is a lot we can do.
๐๏ธโโ๏ธ Build and maintain muscle through strength training
๐ถโโ๏ธ Move regularly
๐ฅ Focus on protein, fibre and whole foods
๐ด Prioritise sleep
๐งโโ๏ธ Manage stress
๐ Seek personalised support where needed
This is not about perfection, restrictive diets or blaming women. It is about understanding the science, recognising the hormonal changes occurring in midlife and empowering women with the knowledge and tools to improve their health.
As a clinician with specialist expertise in both diabetes and menopause care, I am passionate about helping women understand the link between hormones, weight, insulin resistance and long-term wellbeing.
Knowledge is power. Small steps really do create meaningful change.
