What a real day with rheumatoid arthritis looks like 💙💜
I’ve read someone describe it as “running a marathon with the flu while in existential crisis” and it’s pretty dam accurate.
What is rheumatoid arthritis?
It is an autoimmune disease. This means your immune system (which usually fights infection) attacks the cells that line your joints by mistake, making the joints swollen, stiff and painful.
Symptoms of RA include:
Inflammation of the joints
Pain in joints
Joint stiffness
Chronic fatigue
Infections, coughs, colds etc
Cloudy brain, lack of concentration
Emotions high & low
Depression & anxiety
The best way I can describe the physical symptoms of RA, is if you imagine your body is made of lead. Very heavy, very lethargic, very achey & very tired.
The mental symptoms, is a daily battle between working out if you’re actually down & low or whether it’s just the aches & pains.
Emotionally, very high highs, f**k this disease I’m going to do what I want, whether my body likes it or not. I can work 7 days a week & long hours no problem. The low lows, actually, although I feel I can do everything, my body shuts down, pain kicks in, exhaustion takes over.
The balance between work & rest is a never ending battle. Body & mind need rest, a great nights sleep, means I’ll wake up feeling energetic & refreshed. Right???
Wrong!!!
Not enough sleep or too much sleep can result in body stiffness & pain. Our bodies are crying out for rest but too much or not enough ends with the same result. Chronic fatigue!!!
Whether -
Cold - no good, stiff joints, lack of movement
Rain - no good, damp weather, painful joints
Humidity - no good, swollen or fixed joints, pain & fatigue
Sun - good/bad, heat is good, joints more mobile. Over stretching no good, leads to pain the day/days after.
No day is ever the same with RA. I can have all, some or none of the above symptoms. There is no such thing as ‘getting used to it’.
However, I wouldn’t change any part of my body or how it works. It’s what makes me, me! I’m proud of who I am, what I’ve overcome and what I’ll continue to achieve.
If you suffer with RA or something similar, let me know your experiences. ⬇️
