Bowen Training UK

Some people arrive at Bowen training with years of clinical experience.

Others arrive because Bowen has awakened an unexpected curiosity. They may never previously have imagined themselves becoming a therapist.

Both can bring something valuable.

A professional background provides useful knowledge and experience. Bowen also asks for qualities that cannot be assumed from qualifications alone: precision, patience, adaptability and the ability to use less force rather than more.

An Introduction to Bowen Workshop allows you to experience the technique, begin learning the distinctive Bowen move and find out what professional training involves.

It is suitable for:

* Therapists interested in adding Bowen to their existing practice
* Health and movement professionals curious about a gentler approach
* People seriously considering Bowen as a new professional direction

Previous therapy experience is helpful, but it isn’t the only indication of potential. What matters is a willingness to learn, practise and develop the quality of touch Bowen requires.

People may begin from different places. The professional standard remains the same.

Introduction to Bowen Workshops are available across the UK.

What happens when we stop ignoring what our bodies are trying to tell us?

It's a question researchers recently explored in a fascinating study published in Nature Human Behaviour.

Participants were given a standard histamine skin-prick test to create a small, temporary inflammatory response. In one session, they were asked to focus on the sensation. In another, they were distracted by videos and other tasks.

The surprising result?

When participants paid attention to the sensation, the inflammatory response was significantly smaller and settled more quickly than when they were distracted from it.

Interestingly, the participants who focused on the sensation actually reported feeling it more strongly, but their bodies appeared to regulate the response more effectively.

This doesn't mean we can think our way out of illness or injury. The study was small and looked only at a temporary inflammatory reaction in healthy volunteers.

But it does suggest something intriguing:

Paying attention may be more than awareness alone.

It may be one way the brain gathers information about what's happening in the body and helps coordinate a response.

Perhaps curiosity and awareness deserve a little more credit than we give them.

The body works as a system.

What we experience today isn't always the result of what happened today.

Previous injuries, daily habits, stress, movement patterns and compensation can all influence how the body adapts over time.

One of the hallmarks of Bowen Therapy is looking beyond the sore spot and appreciating the whole story the body is telling.

Hope for Depression — the Power of the Vagus Nerve and Bowen Therapy

New research has found that stimulating the vagus nerve — a key communication pathway between the brain and major organs — can significantly improve the quality of life in people with treatment-resistant depression.

In a clinical trial of 493 participants with major depression, those who received vagus nerve stimulation (VNS) showed measurable improvements in mood, daily functioning, and overall wellbeing — even after years of unsuccessful treatment.

👉 And here's where Bowen Therapy comes in.

Bowen Therapy has a specific vagus nerve procedure, and its aim, along with all Bowen moves, is to shift the body from the flight or fight response (sympathetic nervous system) to the parasympathetic nervous system (rest and digest mode) where healing can occur.

While the trial involved an implanted device, Bowen Therapy uses the body’s own healing intelligence — with no drugs, no force, and no devices — just targeted, mindful touch.

The vagus nerve connects — and so does Bowen.

💥THE VAGUS IS OUR ANTI-INFLAMMATORY NERVE💥

Acute inflammation is part of our innate/natural immune response.

But….being stuck in chronic inflammation is not where we want to be.

Adding stress to the mix will cause a drop in our vagal tone, lower our ability to ensure that inflammation doesn’t get out of hand.

It is widely known that stimulating the vagus nerve has a parasympathetic response.

Vagal Nerve Stimulation (VNS) has long been used in cases of severe trauma in order to prevent organ failure, triggering an anti-inflammatory response. VNS has the ability to prevent gut barrier failure after trauma. 👊💥

The vagus nerve innervates the Thymus, Peyer’s patches and mesenteric lymph nodes, all part of our Lymphatic system.

It really brings it all together.
Stress = suppressing of parasympathetic system (Vagus nerve).
Stress will therefore affect your lymph system.

The lymph system is also part of our immune cell conveyer belt!

The bottom line?
Keep your vagus nerve happy and you’ll be helping your immune system to keep you in good shape.

"Your issues are in your tissues."
It’s a phrase you may have heard — and it holds a lot of truth.
Our bodies remember.
Stress, emotion, and trauma can become stored in our muscles, fascia, and nervous system responses.
That’s why working with the body — gently and respectfully — can be such a powerful way to support emotional wellbeing.
Bowen Therapy isn’t just for physical complaints.
People have found that during times of grief, anxiety, overwhelm or transition, Bowen can offer a calm, grounded space to reconnect.
Because healing isn’t just about muscles.
It’s about the whole person.

Bowen Therapy works best when we stop trying to “fix” and start listening.

A practitioner’s job isn’t to decide what the body should do — it’s to read the cues, follow the responses, and offer the right input at the right time

Bowen Therapy isn’t about overpowering tissue.

It’s about creating the right conditions for the body to respond.

Fascia is responsive — not resistant.

The body rarely goes from healthy to overwhelmed overnight.

Before pain, illness, or injury, many people notice subtle changes:

• Feeling more tired than usual
• Taking longer to recover
• Increased muscle tension
• Poor sleep quality
• Less resilience to everyday stress

These aren't problems to ignore.

They're information.

Bowen Therapy is a gentle, hands-on approach that works with the body's connective tissues and systems, supporting relaxation, awareness, and overall well-being.

What early signal does your body tend to give you when you're running on empty?
