Is all collagen supplementation biologically equivalent?
I am frequently asked about collagen by clients, friends and family. It is a hot topic.
With this in mind, in our FREE lunchtime W-Wellness Practitioner Skin Webinar next Monday we are going to give this topic a strong focus.
Let’s jump ahead and talk through one of the common questions.
Just what do we need to be looking out for with a quality collagen product?
The effectiveness of collagen depends less on total intake and more on what is absorbed and utilised.
The distinction between native and hydrolysed forms is therefore key.
• Native collagen (what you’re consuming when eating skin, cartilage, or bone broth before any processing or hydrolysis) is a high–molecular weight protein with limited direct bioavailability
• It is not absorbed intact - digestion reduces it to amino acids and small peptides
• Hydrolysed collagen is enzymatically processed to yield low–molecular weight di- and tripeptides
• Key peptides (e.g. proline-hydroxyproline) are detectable in circulation post-ingestion
• These peptides may exert effects beyond basic nutrition, including cellular signalling
• Potential interactions with fibroblasts and extracellular matrix (ECM) turnover are being explored
• Absorption kinetics and peptide profile are more relevant than total collagen dose
This shifts the focus from simply measuring collagen intake to understanding bioactive peptide delivery.
In practice, a well-formulated collagen product should be assessed based on:
• Degree of hydrolysis and molecular weight distribution
• Peptide profile and potential bioactivity
• Evidence of absorption and systemic availability
Ultimately, efficacy is determined not by how much collagen is consumed, but by what reaches circulation in a functional form.
So, this helps us to answer those questions of ‘can’t I just eat meat’ or ‘what should I look out for when choosing a collagen product'? We have so many wonderful collagen products on our platform https://w-wellness.co.uk
Join us on Monday for more on this. This is a webinar designed for Nutritionists, students of nutrition and Health professionals.
If you are none of these and just interested in collagen - then drop a message below as I am keen to hold a session on this topic for general knowledge too.
