THIS IS A FOOT HEALTH ISSUE.🚨😭
These are the feet of an older gentleman living in a care home that I took care today.
What you can see is severe hyperkeratosis, thickened nails, excessive scaling, and an ingrowing toenail causing pain and affecting mobility. This did not develop overnight. It built up over time.
In many cases like this, the issue is not a lack of care in a single moment, but rather that routine foot checks, early identification, and timely referral are not always consistently in place.
Too often I hear the phrase:
“He’s independent.”
But independence should never mean a lack of support when it is needed.
Painful feet affect mobility, balance, confidence, independence, and overall quality of life. An untreated ingrowing toenail, fungal infection, pressure lesion, or severe skin build-up can quickly become a much bigger problem, especially in older adults.
Today, after careful treatment, debridement, nail care, and removal of the painful areas, this gentleman walked away more comfortably and with improved function.
As part of this treatment, I used the same professional foot care products and solutions that I use every day in clinical practice to cleanse, soften and prepare the feet before treatment. The products and equipment we choose can make a significant difference to patient comfort and treatment outcomes.
If you’re interested in the products I use in clinic or would like recommendations for home foot care, feel free to send me a message.
The real question is:
How many older people are living with foot pain that hasn’t yet been identified or addressed?
✔ Check their feet
✔ Ask if they have pain
✔ Look at their nails
✔ Arrange professional foot care when needed
A five-minute check could prevent months of discomfort.
Foot care isn’t cosmetic.
Foot care is healthcare.
Because nobody should have to live with preventable pain.
