One cold October afternoon, almost 16 years ago, I sat feeding my newborn daughter as darkness fell, late afternoon, outside the window and the rain putter pattered rhythmically on the window pane. I was cosy and felt so lucky.
There is something about becoming a mother in autumn. The world naturally slows down. The trees let go. We spend more time indoors. There is an invitation to hibernate, to nest, to retreat into the small world of your baby. I was there for it!
BUT, autumn postpartum can feel surprisingly hard too.
The darker afternoons. The isolation. The endless feeding and battling with a steriliser! The feeling that everyone else’s life is carrying on while yours has completely changed. I just wanted someone to wrap me up, bring me tea and soup and remind me how well I was doing.
If you’re expecting an autumn baby, don’t just prepare for the birth. Prepare for the becoming. Spend a little time considering what you want this time to feel like, to look like and perhaps more importantly, consider who you want in your team.
