THE HEATWAVE STRUGGLE - Tossing and turning because of the heat. Is your brain overacting to the temperature?

THE STRESS BUCKET EFFECT - Physical heat and anxiety combine to ā€œfill your stress bucket,ā€ keeping you stuck in a primitive brain state.

TUNING THE MIND & BODY - Slow, steady music lowers your heart rate, physically ā€œcoolingā€ the body.

REACHING ā€˜INNER COOL - Visualise a preferred, cool future.

šŸŽ§ Ever wonder why your favourite song can instantly change your mood? It’s not just magic—it’s neuroscience.

When we use music intentionally, it becomes a powerful tool for mental health support. In Music Therapy, research shows exactly how different elements of music stimulate and reshape our neural pathways to help us heal, regulate, and thrive.

Here is how two of the core elements of music work behind the scenes to support your mental wellbeing:

🄁 Rhythm & Entrainment
Our brains love predictability. Through a neurological phenomenon called auditory-motor entrainment, our internal biological rhythms (like heart rate, breathing, and brainwaves) naturally synchronize to an external steady beat.

The Mental Health Benefit: If your anxiety is racing, listening to or playing a slow, steady rhythm can physically slow down your heart rate and lower cortisol levels, grounding your nervous system.

šŸŽø Melody & Pitch
Melodies speak the language of the brain's limbic system—the emotional centre of the brain. Higher pitches and ascending melodies can trigger dopamine release and lift mood, while deeper, descending tones can offer comfort and a sense of being understood.

The Mental Health Benefit: When words fail, melody steps in. MT uses melodic expression to help individuals process complex trauma, release trapped emotions, and find their voice.

šŸŽ¶ Music isn't just an art form; it's a structural language that our brains are hardwired to respond to. Whether it's song composition, active drumming, improvisation with an MT or a creating a playlist for self-regulation, music therapy helps to support you on your journey to emotional regulation and mental wellbeing.

How do you use music to support your mental health?

I’ve been a little quiet on here lately—life has been a bit of a juggling act trying to balance work, studying, and family! šŸ¤¹ā€ā™€ļø But it’s days like today that remind me exactly why I do what I do and how lucky I am to be a Music Therapist šŸŽ¶

Where else could my ā€œoffice hoursā€ involve helping a tween with ASD and ADHD improvise a rap about the Bristol Stool Scale šŸŽ¤šŸ’© or putting on a puppet show with a 10-year-old to a very eclectic soundtrack? šŸŽšŸŽ¶

While it looks like pure chaos and fun from the outside, there is so much hard work happening behind the scenes. Each session was intentionally designed to work on:

Executive Functioning: Planning out the ā€œsetlistā€ and performance.

Emotional Expression: Using characters to say what’s hard to put into words.

Sensory Regulation: Managing energy levels through rhythm and movement.

Sustained Attention: Staying engaged in a complex, multi-step task.

Big thank you to for the photos
