Today, July 27, is World Head and Neck Cancer Day.
Head and neck cancer is often cited as the seventh most common cancer worldwide, yet many people know very little about it.
Before my diagnosis, I did not know cancer could begin in a tonsil.
I did not know that a lump in the neck could be the first obvious warning sign.
I did not know that HPV could cause throat cancer or that someone relatively young, someone who does not fit the image people often associate with this disease, could still be diagnosed.
I was 43 when I learned firsthand.
My cancer began in my left tonsil and had spread to lymph nodes in my neck. My father was later diagnosed with the same type of cancer in a slightly different location in the back of his throat. His early warning sign was coughing up blood.
That diagnosis changed my body, my life, and the way I will listen to my body forever.
Head and neck cancers can affect the mouth, throat, tonsils, tongue, voice box, nose, sinuses, and salivary glands. Possible warning signs can include:
A lump or swelling in the neck.
A persistent sore throat.
Trouble or pain when swallowing.
Hoarseness or a change in the voice.
Unexplained ear pain.
Coughing up blood.
A sore or patch in the mouth that does not heal.
Unexplained weight loss.
Changes that continue, worsen, or simply do not feel right.
These symptoms do not automatically mean cancer. But persistent or unexplained symptoms deserve to be taken seriously.
Head and neck cancer is not only a smokerβs disease. To***co and heavy alcohol use are risk factors, but HPV is also an important cause of oropharyngeal cancers, including cancers of the tonsils and base of the tongue.
Today, I raise awareness for those currently in treatment, those waiting for answers, those living with the lasting effects, those we have lost, and those who may receive an earlier diagnosis because someone shared what they knew.
Awareness cannot erase what cancer takes.
But it may help someone recognize a warning sign, ask another question, seek another opinion, or finally receive the answer they have been searching for.
Please share. Someone may need this information more than we realize.
