Mugwort appreciation evening and harvest along the river 🌿💚🌿💫🌙
I’ve been growing, foraging and making things from magical mugwort for many years now - oils, vinegars, tinctures, sprays, dream pouches and incense, as well as jewellery, talismans and decorations from its stems. It has so many wonderful properties and its earthy aroma is heavenly. This year I’m drying it for incense, divination teas and to make a ‘crone balm’, a little invention of mine!
“Providence has placed Mugwort everywhere about our doors; so that reason and authority, as well the notice of our senses point it out for use…” Sir John Hill, botanist 1700s
There was an old ritual (that likely had pre-Christian roots), to wear a crown of mugwort on St John’s Eve (23rd June, which was the same old Roman date of the summer solstice eve,) to ensure evil was kept at bay. Given that folklore is often the distorted story of our folk medicine, I imagine this could be to do with Mugwort’s potent insect repellant properties. A crown of Artemis plants like mugwort, wormwood or southernwood, should keep any flies, moths and other bugs at bay during solstice eve celebrations.
A crown of mugwort does sound wonderful and practical, will have to try it! 🌿🌞🌿💚🌿💫
