Here at Avocet House, we are committed to providing the highest standards of care, and an important part of that is ensuring our team regularly refreshes and develops their skills.

Over the last few weeks, the home has been buzzing with training sessions, as staff have been undertaking refresher courses in Basic Life Support and Moving & Handling. Ongoing training helps our team maintain the knowledge, confidence, and practical skills needed to provide safe, effective, and compassionate care to our residents every day.

We are especially proud to share that several members of our team have taken their professional development even further and are now trained and qualified to deliver this essential training themselves. Having in-house trainers allows us to continue building a strong culture of learning and excellence throughout the home.

A huge congratulations to our newest trainers, Natalie and Graham, on achieving this fantastic milestone. Your hard work, dedication, and commitment to supporting both your colleagues and our residents are truly appreciated.

Well done to everyone involvedβ€”we are proud to have such a passionate and skilled team at Avocet House! πŸ‘πŸŽ‰

⚽ Football fever has arrived at Avocet House! ⚽

Our Activities Coordinator has been busy transforming the home with football-themed decorations, getting everyone into the spirit of the World Cup.

The excitement kicked off on Monday morning with a football-inspired fitness session led by Elly from BeGreatFitness. Residents enjoyed a fun-filled workout packed with movement, laughter, and plenty of ball-related activities.

To round off the session, everyone took part in a fantastic game of seated football, bringing out some great teamwork, friendly competition, and lots of smiles.

What a wonderful way to celebrate the beautiful game! πŸ†βš½πŸ˜Š

Last Friday, we enjoyed a wonderful visit to the We'll Meet Again WW2 Museum in Frieston. We are incredibly fortunate to have such a fantastic place just a few minutes' drive away.

The visit gave us a valuable opportunity to revisit the past, sparking conversations, memories, and stories as we explored the vast collection of wartime memorabilia. It was fascinating to see how much our residents could recall, with many remembering their Co-op numbers and regiment numbersβ€”important details that had to be committed to memory during those times.

The museum's displays brought history to life and encouraged meaningful reminiscence, allowing residents to share their experiences and connect with one another through their memories.

A special thank you goes to Kirsty for generously volunteering your time to support us on the trip. Your help and companionship were greatly appreciated and helped make the day such a success.

We had a fantastic time and look forward to visiting again in the future!

It's hard to tell what the weather is doing at the momentβ€”one minute it's sunshine, the next it's clouds! β˜€οΈπŸŒ¦οΈ

But whatever the forecast brings, there's always a good excuse for an ice cream. Whether you're enjoying the sunshine or brightening up a grey day, a delicious scoop is never a bad idea.

Wouldn't you agree? πŸ¦πŸ˜‹

πŸŒˆπŸ’ƒ Scarves, Smiles and Relaxation! πŸ’ƒπŸŒˆ

Our seated dance class was full of colour and energy today as we incorporated bright, flowing scarves into our movements.

The room was filled with residents enthusiastically waving, twirling and dancing with their scarves, creating beautiful patterns and movements while enjoying a gentle form of exercise. Not only was it great fun, but it also helped improve coordination, flexibility and wellbeing.

As the session progressed, we challenged ourselves with a variety of dance movements before gradually slowing things down and ending with a relaxing meditation. The calming music and gentle movements allowed everyone to unwind, leaving us feeling peaceful and refreshed.

One resident, Paul, summed up the experience perfectly when he said, "It's like a yoga session and quite hypnotic. I feel so relaxed."

It's wonderful to see how activities like seated dance can bring together exercise, creativity and relaxation, helping everyone feel both energised and calm at the same time.

πŸͺ Busy Bakers at Avocet House! πŸͺ

Our baking club had one thing on their minds today – homemade shortbread biscuits! So, aprons on and mixing bowls at the ready, that's exactly what we made.

It was wonderful to see so many experienced bakers in action. From rubbing the butter into the flour to shaping and preparing the dough, the techniques and confidence on display showed that baking is a skill that stays with you for a lifetime.

The aroma of freshly baked shortbread soon filled the home, and judging by how quickly they disappeared, they were a great success! In fact, most of the biscuits were enjoyed while they were still warm from the oven – and who can blame us? πŸ˜‹

🎨 A Lovely Morning of Painting on Our Second Floor 🎨

Our residents enjoyed a wonderful morning of painting on the second floor.

It was lovely to see everyone so focused and engaged as they worked on their individual masterpieces. The room was filled with concentration, conversation and a sense of calm as brushes moved across the paper and vibrant colours gradually brought each picture to life.

Creative activities like painting provide so many benefits, from encouraging self-expression and stimulating the imagination to promoting relaxation and a sense of achievement. It was a pleasure to watch our residents become absorbed in their artwork and take pride in every brushstroke.

Once completed, the artwork was proudly displayed in the dining room for everyone to admire, creating a wonderful gallery of talent for residents, visitors and staff to enjoy.

πŸŽ‰πŸŽ‚ Happy 81st Birthday, Phil! πŸŽ‚πŸŽ‰

Today we celebrated a very special occasion as our fabulous Phil turned 81!

Phil enjoyed visits from family members throughout the day and was delighted to receive lots of thoughtful cards, gifts, and birthday wishes. It was wonderful to see him surrounded by so much love and kindness on his special day.

Residents and staff alike joined in the celebrations, sharing their best wishes and helping to make the day one to remember. At teatime, everyone came together to sing a rousing rendition of Happy Birthday before enjoying a delicious birthday cake, specially prepared by our wonderful kitchen team.

There were plenty of smiles, laughter, and happy memories made as we celebrated with Phil and marked this milestone birthday.

From everyone at Avocet House, we hope you've had a truly lovely day, Phil, and wish you happiness, good health, and many more wonderful birthdays to come! πŸŽˆπŸŽπŸŽ‰

🌸 Taking Time to Stop and Smell the Flowers 🌸

Sometimes it's the simple moments that bring the greatest joy.

Today, Jan was delighted to show off a beautiful bouquet of flowers that had been thoughtfully gifted to her by a friend. Even more special, the flowers had been carefully handpicked from her friend's own garden, making the gift all the more meaningful.

Moments like these remind us how much a thoughtful gesture can brighten someone's day and strengthen the bonds of friendship.

It was lovely to see Jan's smile as she took time to appreciate the flowers and the kindness behind them. πŸŒΌπŸ’
