Did you know that the ancient root of Reiki is actually Shintoism? Japan's oldest nature based spiritual tradition?
In Shinto mythology, creation itself is a collaborative effort between the divine male (Izanagi) and divine female (Izanami).
Unlike many Western traditions where the supreme deity is strictly paternal, Shinto’s most revered, central deity is a female sun goddess, Amaterasu Omikami.
Furthermore, Shinto cosmology is deeply intertwined with Onmyodo (the Japanese adaptation of Yin and Yang), which views the entire universe as a constant, balanced dance between the feminine (Yin / In) masculine (Yang / Yo).
Every natural thing carries a blend of both forces.
While Reiki has evolved over time, moving through Tendai Buddhism and eventually traveling onward to the USA as a modern New Age practice, its real roots and simplest application are found right here in Shintoism.
This foundational, balanced connection to nature and universal energy is exactly what I use in my own Reiki practice today.
