Helping young people explore their future options

On Thursday 8 October, we attended The Futures Fair, supporting young people with learning difficulties or neurodiversity as they plan for their future after education or training.

We spoke to more than 200 young people, families, carers and teachers about our specialist Driving School, Theory Test Support, and the wider services available at William Merritt Centre.

It was a fantastic opportunity to meet so many people, answer questions and explain how we can help.

Thank you to everyone who came to chat with us – we hope to be back next year!

Want reassurance that your relative/friend is still driving safely?

Our Mature Driver Appraisal is a friendly, supportive way to review their driving, build confidence and help them stay safe and independent on the road for longer.

The appraisal gives them the opportunity to:

✓ Review their driving skills with an experienced professional
✓ Identify any areas where small changes could make driving safer
✓ Build confidence behind the wheel
✓ Receive practical, impartial advice to support their future driving

And they'll also leave with a handy road safety goody bag, packed with useful information and resources from the William Merritt Centre and our West Yorkshire road safety partners.

🎉 Congratulations, Ben! 🎉

A huge congratulations to Ben, who passed his driving test first time in Knaresborough, with just one driving fault! 🚗👏

Ben had previously taken a break from lessons after finding driving difficult, and it’s fair to say he thought he might never pass his test. However, with the support and guidance of our instructor, Sam, Ben worked hard to overcome his nerves and build his confidence behind the wheel.

We’re absolutely delighted to see all his hard work pay off — what a fantastic achievement! 🌟

Well done, Ben 🙌

“The assessment improved my independence as I was able to go on an aeroplane with my daughter. The two ladies that helped us went above and beyond. So grateful.”

Congratulations to Ian who attended York Driving Assessment Centre for a Medical Fitness to Drive Assessment following a recent bilateral amputation.

He was referred to discuss driving with adaptations; on his assessment day Ian made the assessors aware that he wanted to demonstrate he was safe to drive using his prosthetic legs. He completed a good safe drive on a standard set route including an excellent emergency stop.

He was signed off as safe to drive and given information about where to contact if he needed any further driving support in future. Well done Ian! Enjoy your drives to get back out to your boat.

Michael attended the Centre due to difficulties walking long distances and accessing his local shops.

He explained that he enjoys walking, appreciates being outdoors in the fresh air, and wishes to continue walking independently.

Michael initially wanted to try powered wheelchairs to reach his local shops and pubs, but after a discussion with our occupational therapist, it was decided that an outdoor rollator would be more appropriate.

Michael trialled an outdoor rollator and was very impressed by its manoeuvrability and the support it offered. He was able to mobilise much further with this device compared to his walking stick.

“You’ve been excellent, you’ve really opened my eyes, I’d never considered an outdoor rollator. It has been invaluable. Thank you”

Two of William Merritt Centre's driving instructors, Sam and Jayne, visited York Driving Test Centre to speak with driving examiners about drivers with disabilities and what type of adaptions they might use in their vehicles.

The York examiners tested what its like to drive with some of the adaptions such as, push/pull hand controls and left foot accelerator.

These visits are designed to give examiners some extended knowledge about disability driving adaptions and to help minimise queries on disabled tests for the learner.

We love working with all agencies linked to disability driving and older drivers, to support our clients with their independence.
