Plastics are heavily used in healthcare as they are used to produce life-saving devices such as syringes, IV lines etc

However, plastic waste worsens climate change at every stage of its lifecycle and contributes to about 3–4% of global greenhouse gas emissions.

In this regard, large healthcare centres like UGMC are committed to using and disposing plastics safely as well as in reducing its
consumption.

On World Environment Day on 5th June, our Health and Safety Department warmly invites you to participate in a webiner on the topic
Waste Segregation and Plastic Reduction: A Shared Responsibility

Experiential learning - the process of learning through "doing" and "reflecting" is very important in modern educational systems. This is because it bridges the gap between theoretical concepts and practical application.

For this reason, the KNUST Faculty of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences have been bringing their Pharm D students to UGMC over the years to enable their pharmacy students to apply
Pharmacological knowledge to actual patients, collaborate directly with our healthcare teams, and understand complex medication management in a high-stakes environment.

We were therefore pleased to welcome the KNUST team comprising Prof. (Mrs.) Mercy Opare-Addo, Dr. Kofi Boamah-Mensah and Dr. Yaw Duah Boakye who visited their students with us at UGMC on Monday, 1st June 2026 as part of the Faculty’s routine monitoring and evaluation exercise.

We were also pleasantly surprised to receive a generous donation of assorted detergents locally produced by the Faculty.

At UGMC, our vision is to distinguish outselves in the delivery of world-class patient care, training and research and so we are excited to contribute to the training of these future pharmacists.

Last Friday, we were deeply honoured to host the Minister of Health and Wellness of Jamaica, Hon. Christopher Tufton, and his entourage at the University of Ghana Medical Centre Ltd.

This significant visit centred on building strategic relationships to strengthen health services in the two countries as well as a guided tour of our facilities.

We are truly excited about the prospect of building stronger, lasting ties between Ghana and Jamaica in order to elevate the standard of healthcare amongst a people who share a common history.
