Excited to announce that the director of the UGMC Medical Training and Simulation Centre, Dr. Chris Owoo has been invited the University of Florida ( UF) College of Medicine in the USA as a Visiting Professor. He is currently delivering a one-hour lecture on the topic Emergency & Critical Illness in Africa: Simulation - Based Education, Innovation Capacity Building & Health Systems Strengthening bove at the UF Emergency Medicine Ground Rounds today at 16:00 GMT.

Sometimes, innovation is not about acquiring something new. It is about ensuring better coordination of the resources already available. So in a remarkable demonstration of leadership and depiction of what is possible when institutions choose collaboration over working in silos, the UGMC today received an Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation (ECMO) machine worth about 4 Million Ghana Cedis (over $ 350, 000) from the Greater Accra Regional Hospital.

An ECMO machine is an advanced and complex life-support device that temporarily takes over the work of a patient's heart and lungs to allow these organs to rest and heal following severe disease affecting the heart, lungs and other critical organs.

The machine which has been temporarily leased to the UGMC, was handed over to the CEO of the Centre, Dr. Abdul Samed -Tanko by the Director General of the Ghana Health Service, Dr. Samuel Kaba Akoriye.

The handing-over ceremony took place at the Greater Accra Regional Hospital in the presence of the Regional Director of Health Services, Dr. Robert Amesiya, the Director of Medical Affairs of UGMC, Dr. Baffoe - Gyan and the Medical Director of the Greater Accra Regional Hospital, Dr. Leslie Issa Adam-Zakariah, together with other representatives from both institutions.

This is a shining example of putting patients at the centre of healthcare and using collaboration as a productivity strategy - the kind of collaboration worth celebrating and worth replicating.

For us at UGMC, we are super excited that the Machine will enable us to continue to save more precious lives, and as reiterated by Dr. Samed-Tanko, "it will move UGMC a step closer to the realization of its vision to become Ghana first quartenary medical centre."

UGMC proudly hosted members of the newly established Association of Plastic, Reconstructive and Aesthetic Surgeons in Ghana during the historic launch of the Association on 29th August 2026.

Delivering the vote of thanks, Chief Executive Officer of UGMC, Dr. Abdul Samed-Tanko congratulated the members of the Association and hailed the launch as an important milestone for the advancement of plastic and reconstructive surgery in the country. He also called for support of stakeholders for the establishment of more plastic and reconstructive surgery centres across the country in order to improve access to specialised care for all.

“Acute pain in hospitalised patients is common but data on the subject is hard to find in Africa. Meanwhile, it remains a persistant and under-addressed problem on the continent”.

We are excited to announce that the Director of the UGMC Medical Training and Simulation Centre, and Head of Department of Anaesthesia, University of Ghana Medical School, Dr. Christian Owoo is part of the Lead Investigators from 22 countries and 180 health facilities across Africa, whose second paper from the African Critical Illness Outcome Study (ACIOS), has been published in the leading international journal devoted to pain medicine and research - Pain Assessment and Intervention Notation (PAIN).

The title of the study is “One In Seven Has Severe Pain: A Point-Prevalence Study Of Hospitalised Patients Across Africa” and is remarkably the largest study from the African continent documenting the prevalence, severity and associations of pain in hospital patients.

The multidisciplinary investigators include over 200 investigators from Ghana from 18 Ghanaian health facilities including UGMC.
