๐Ÿ‘ถ๐Ÿฝ๐Ÿ’ฌ 5 COMMUNICATION MILESTONES TO WATCH FOR | 0โ€“6 MONTHS

Did you know your baby is communicating with you long before their first word? ๐Ÿฅน๐Ÿ’›

Communication begins from the very beginning โ€” through eye contact, facial expressions, sounds, smiles, and those beautiful little back-and-forth interactions.

Here are 5 things to watch for during your babyโ€™s first 6 months:

๐Ÿ‘€ Look & Connect โ€” watching faces and making eye contact
๐Ÿ‘‚๐Ÿฝ Listen & Respond โ€” noticing sounds and familiar voices
๐Ÿ—ฃ๏ธ Coo & Vocalize โ€” making sounds like โ€œoooโ€ and โ€œaaaโ€
๐Ÿ˜Š Smile, Laugh & Express โ€” using facial expressions and sounds to engage
๐Ÿ”„ Take Turns โ€” you talk, baby responds, and you respond back

โœจ Remember: Communication isnโ€™t just about words. Every look, smile, sound, and response is an opportunity for connection and learning.

๐Ÿ’ก Try this at home: Talk to your baby, sing to them, imitate their sounds, pause and wait for their response, smile back, and give them plenty of opportunities to โ€œtalkโ€ to you.

๐Ÿ“Œ Save this post and come back to it as you follow your babyโ€™s communication journey!

And remember, every baby develops at their own pace. If you have concerns about your childโ€™s communication or development, early guidance can make a difference. ๐Ÿ’›

What goes into one therapy session? More than youโ€™d think ๐Ÿ‘€โœจ

Before a session starts, our therapists already know what theyโ€™re working on and why. In this one, the goals were:

These are the main targets for today

๐Ÿ–๐Ÿพ Fine motor skills: small, precise hand movements for writing, buttoning and feeding
๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿพ Bilateral coordination: using both sides of the body together
๐Ÿ‘€ Hand-eye coordination
๐ŸŽฏ Attention and behaviour, tracked on a behaviour chart: โ€œI kept my hands to myself. I was quiet and listening. I completed my work neatly.โ€ โญ

Every activity on the table is there for a reason. To your child itโ€™s play. To us, itโ€™s therapy. ๐Ÿ’œ

Parents, a quick note: Busy boards and worksheets are great tools, but not every activity suits every child. Speak to your childโ€™s therapist so you know the activities you use at home are working on the areas your child needs. ๐Ÿค๐Ÿพ

Does your child struggle with identifying people or items, or with sorting and organizing things around them? ๐Ÿงฉ**

In this activity, our therapist works with a child on sorting and manipulating small objects using a spoon and cups โ€” a simple, playful exercise that targets:

โœ‹ Hand-to-eye coordination
๐Ÿ–๏ธ Fine motor manipulation skills
๐Ÿง  Visual discrimination (identifying and sorting by color/type)

The best part? These skills donโ€™t stay in the therapy room. They transfer into everyday life โ€” getting dressed, eating, organizing toys โ€” and help build lasting independence.

At SENA Pediatric Therapy Centre, every activity is designed with a bigger purpose in mind. ๐Ÿ’›

Meet Aliya Boone, owner of A to Z Speech and a speech language pathologist with over 20 years of experience who spent some time with us at the center.

She emphasizes on early intervention and the different services we offer to ensure every child irrespective of their concerns can reach their maximum potentials

This ball-reaching activity looks simple, but itโ€™s doing a lot of work. As the child reaches and pulls, weโ€™re building postural control and coordination โ€” while their hips and legs stay stabilized on the ball for the extra core engagement.

It also brings in sensory integration, especially light and deep touch input, which helps regulate the nervous system for the task ahead.

But hereโ€™s the real magic: this activity transcends therapy. When integrated consistently, these same skills show up in daily life โ€” feeding themselves, writing, and participating fully in activities at school.

Thatโ€™s what pediatric occupational therapy is all about: turning small movements into lifelong independence. ๐Ÿ’œ

Two organizations. Two 5th anniversaries. One conversation that changed everything. ๐Ÿงก

It started in April 2025, when our Clinical Director traveled to Philadelphia to present research on OT advocacy in Ghana at AOTAโ€™s INSPIRE Conference. A few weeks later, in Charlotte, NC, she finally got to meet someone sheโ€™d long admired online in person, Nancy, co-founder of Black In Rehab, and follow up on conversations theyโ€™d already started about bringing Black In Rehab to Ghana.

Fast forward through months of planning, partnership building with Black In Rehab, GUBA Foundation, OTAG, and the University of Ghana, and a donation of therapy tools and resources to our centre, and on June 23, 2026, it all came together: Ghanaโ€™s first Neurodiversity & Autism Engagement Day. ๐ŸŽ‰

A full house of parents, therapists, educators, and advocates. Media rounds on Star FM and GHOne TV. And a room full of people reminded why this work matters.

This year, Sena Pediatric Therapy Centre turns 5. Black In Rehab turns 5. Two journeys, born the same year, meeting at exactly the right moment to serve our community together, and this is only the beginning. ๐ŸŒ #

๐Ÿ’ฌ Want in on the next one? Comment โ€œCONFERENCEโ€ to join the waitlist for our next Neurodiversity Workshop & Training, a multi-day, in-depth event coming soon.
