Six months into the year, the Greater Accra Regional Health Directorate sat down with the Regional Health Management Team and its health partners to answer one question: how is the region actually doing?

The 2026 Half-Year Performance Review Meeting, held at the GNAT Hall in Accra, was under the theme, "Strengthening the Health System Resilience to Respond to Clinical and Public Health Emergencies: The Role of Stakeholders."

In his welcome address, the Regional Director of Health Service, Dr. Robert Amesiya, called on participants to treat the review as more than a formality. He urged an honest, evidence-based look at the region's performance, with figures on clinical care and public health driving the conversation rather than sitting alongside it. He encouraged an open and plain conversation about the gaps on the ground, arguing that a health system cannot claim resilience against emergencies if it isn't first honest about its everyday performance.

After presentations on the region's half-year clinical care and public health performance, the Shai Osudoku District Hospital and the Ayawaso West Municipal Health Directorate also shared their experiences in strengthening facility preparedness and stakeholder engagement, while the Regional Health Information Team, presented the region's standing on the National Holistic Assessment Indicators.

Closing the meeting, Dr. Amesiya reiterated the Directorate's commitment to building a health system resilient enough to respond to emergencies as they arise, and thanked stakeholders across the region for their continued collaboration.

Hon. Jerry Ahmed Shaib, Member of Parliament for Weija Gbawe Constituency, has funded the construction of a new Wellness and Adolescent Clinic at Oblogo Health Centre to commemorate his 50th birthday. The project, led by his wife, Mrs. Josephine Shaib, through the JAS Foundation, replaces a temporary tented space that previously offered limited privacy for clients.

The facility was formally handed over to the Municipal Health Director, Dr. Jennifer Mintah Andoh, at a ceremony on August 7, 2026, attended by Management, the JAS Foundation, and other health stakeholders.

The new clinic is expected to improve privacy, confidentiality, and working conditions for wellness and adolescent health services, and to encourage greater uptake of these services by young people at the facility.

Ussher Hospital has received a Radiant Warmer with Phototherapy Machine from the Rotary Club of Accra-Airport Enclave, to support neonatal care within the Ashiedu Keteke sub-metro.

The donation followed engagement between management and staff of the facility and the Rotary Club.

The Club President assured the facility of continued support in other priority areas as the need arises.

The Regional Director of Health Service, Dr. Robert Amesiya, this morning, received a team from Africa CDC, the Ministry of Health, and the Institutional Care Division, GHS.

The visit is part of work to develop a continental guideline on Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH) and Infection Prevention and Control (IPC). Greater Accra was selected to test a WASH-IPC checklist ahead of its rollout across the continent.

The team will visit four facilities in the region: Greater Accra Regional Hospital, Weija-Gbawe Municipal Hospital, Pentecost Hospital, and Korle Bu Teaching Hospital.

This morning's meeting marked the team's entry into the region.

Nungua Polyclinic has begun offering Caesarean Section services, with the facility's first procedure successfully completed.

The addition of Caesarean delivery expands the range of maternal health services available at the polyclinic, giving mothers in the Nungua catchment area access to emergency and planned surgical delivery without the need for referral to a higher-level facility.

Both mother and baby are reported to be in stable condition following the procedure.

The development is expected to reduce delays in accessing surgical delivery for women in the area and ease pressure on referral facilities within the region.

The Regional Director of Health Service, Dr. Robert Amesiya, held his first meeting with staff of the new Weija Children's Specialist Hospital, marking the formal start of preparations for the facility's take-off.

The orientation, held at the hospital, brought together nursing, clinical, administrative, and support staff posted to the new facility, along with the Municipal Director of Health Service for Weija Gbawe Municipality, Dr. Jennifer Andoh, and Medical Superintendent, Dr. Nana Brako. The session followed closely on the heels of the hospital's official handover to the Ghana Health Service last week Friday.

In his remarks, Dr. Amesiya welcomed staff to what he described as one of the most important child health investments in the region in recent years. He said the hospital's opening represented a rare opportunity for the region to set a new standard in paediatric care, and that the staff assembled would be the ones to define what that standard looked like in practice.
He walked staff through the hospital's mandate, its scope of services, and its position within the region's broader push toward universal health coverage.

He reminded staff that the facility was built to serve not only Weija Gbawe but children referred from across the region and beyond, and that this reach came with a responsibility to maintain consistently high standards of care.

Dr. Amesiya used part of the session to address expectations directly. He spoke about punctuality, professionalism, and courtesy toward patients and their families, noting that for many parents arriving at the hospital, a sick child is already a frightening experience, and that staff conduct could either ease or deepen that anxiety. He also raised the importance of proper use and maintenance of the equipment and infrastructure provided, referencing lessons from other facilities where poor upkeep had shortened the lifespan of newly commissioned hospitals.

The orientation covered practical matters as well, including reporting lines, safety protocols, and an overview of departments and services available at the facility. Staff were taken on a guided tour of the wards, the biomedical equipment areas, and support units, giving many of them their first full look at the facility they would be working in.

Dr. Brako, speaking after the tour, thanked the Regional Director for making time to meet the team so early and assured him that staff were committed to justifying the confidence placed in them. Dr. Andoh added that the Municipal Directorate would continue working closely with the hospital's management to ensure staff had the support and logistics needed to deliver quality care from day one.

Dr. Amesiya closed the session by encouraging staff to see themselves as pioneers of the facility, tasked with building its culture and reputation from the ground up. He expressed confidence that, with the right attitude and teamwork, the new Weija Children's Specialist Hospital would grow into one of the leading centres for child health in the region.

: World Hepatitis Day 2026
ICYMI: On July 28, 2026, the Greater Accra Regional Health Directorate, in collaboration with Kaneshie Polyclinic, joined the world to commemorate World Hepatitis Day, with the regional launch held at the Presbyterian Church of Ghana, Kaneshie Congregation.

This year's global theme, "Elimination for Everyone, Everywhere, Right Now!" set the tone for a morning dedicated to awareness, testing, and action against a disease that remains largely silent in many communities.

The programme was chaired by Prof. Promise Emmanuel Sefogah, Associate Professor and Head of Research at the University of Ghana Medical School and Korle Bu Teaching Hospital, who gave a lecture on the history of hepatitis, its modes of transmission, prevention, and treatment.

Guest of Honour was Dr. Salomey Bandoh who entreated everyone to desist from stigmatising people living with the disease.

Formally launching the celebration, the Regional Director of Health Service, Dr. Robert Amesiya, noted: "plans are far advanced by the Ministry of Health to include Hepatitis vaccines in routine vaccination."

Also present was the Kaneshie Mantse, Nii Nikoi Ashalley, who pledged his commitment to organising his indigenes to keep their environment clean, get tested, and get vaccinated against viral hepatitis. Representatives from local assemblies, traditional councils, health facilities, and faith-based organisations also brought messages of solidarity in support of the campaign.

The event concluded with free hepatitis B and C screening for attendees, in line with the region's ongoing "Know Your Status" campaign.

Illicit drug use among adolescents is coming under renewed scrutiny in La-Nkwantanang Madina Municipality, as the Municipal Health Directorate partners with the Narcotics Control Commission (NACOC) on a health campaign aimed at curbing the trend.

The campaign targets second cycle schools and will scale down to junior high schools.

The first programme was held with PRESEC Boys, Legon, on Wednesday, August 12, 2026. In attendance were all students of the school, their teachers, and the Drug Free Club, the Municipal Health Team, the Narcotics Control Commission team, and University of Ghana Legon master's students pursuing Public Health.

During the engagement, the Narcotics Control Commander for La-Nkwantanang Madina Municipal spoke about illicit drugs available within the municipality and the general effects of drug abuse, including school dropouts, increased risk of mental health conditions, adverse effects on the male and female reproductive systems, and the risk of contracting blood-transmitted diseases such as HIV/AIDS and Hepatitis B/C. He also elaborated on the signs and traits of substance abuse and who to contact for help.

The Municipal Nutrition Officer emphasised the effects of drug interaction on nutrition, including anaemia, poor appetite, and reduced ability to learn and concentrate.

As part of efforts to address drug abuse in schools, the Municipal Health Directorate, with NACOC, has developed an anonymous checklist for students with drug issues to fill out and seek help. The checklist is meant to identify students at risk and inform strategies to reduce drug use among adolescents in senior and junior high schools across the municipality. Educational materials on drug abuse and customised exercise books were distributed to students after the engagement.

Students were actively engaged in the discussions, asking over twenty questions, with additional questions to be forwarded to the team. A helpline was also provided to serve as a support line for students who wish to reach out to the team directly.
