“In Ghana, public health interest must never be sacrificed to commercial interest.”

This was the message from Dr. Martin K**i, Ag. Director of the To***co and Substance Abuse Directorate, Food and Drugs Authority at our Stakeholder Engagement on the Development and Institutionalisation of a Code of Conduct for Public Officials in Ghana.

Dr. K**i noted that Ghana has made progress through the Public Health Act, the To***co Control Regulations and the National To***co Control Strategy. He stressed that protecting public health policy requires decision-making to be insulated from commercial and other vested interests, particularly those of the to***co industry. This is the purpose of Article 5.3 of the WHO FCTC.

He highlighted the participatory development of the Code, with contributions from civil society, academia and development partners, and recognised civil society’s role in monitoring industry activities and promoting transparency.

Therefore, Ghana must sustain this momentum, finalise the Code and ensure its safeguards are applied in practice to protect public health policy from to***co industry interference.
