🩺 WHAT IS A KIDNEY INFECTION?

A kidney infection, medically known as pyelonephritis, is a serious type of urinary tract infection (UTI) that affects one or both kidneys. It usually begins when bacteria enter the body through the urinary tract and travel upward from the bladder into the kidneys. Because the kidneys play a vital role in filtering waste and excess fluids from the blood, any infection affecting them should never be taken lightly.

Unlike a simple UTI that may only cause discomfort during urination, a kidney infection can affect the whole body. When bacteria reach the kidneys, they can multiply quickly and interfere with normal kidney function. This is why kidney infections require early medical attention to prevent complications.

Kidney infections can affect anyone—men, women, and even children. However, women are generally at higher risk because of anatomical differences in the urinary tract. People who frequently experience UTIs, drink little water, delay urination, or have weakened immune systems may also be more vulnerable.

One of the dangers of kidney infection is that it can sometimes start quietly. A mild urinary infection may be ignored, allowing bacteria to spread further. If left untreated, a kidney infection can lead to kidney damage, repeated infections, or the spread of infection to other parts of the body.

The good news is that kidney infections are preventable and treatable when detected early. Understanding what a kidney infection is and how it develops is the first step in protecting your kidney health.
