A Strong Endorsement for Hope and Universal Health Coverage

At the ongoing Ministry of Health 2026 Annual Health Summit in Accra, Vice President Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang delivered a powerful message on the future of healthcare in Ghana, highlighting the critical role of the Ghana Medical Trust Fund in the country's journey toward Universal Health Coverage.

Addressing health sector stakeholders, policymakers, and development partners, the Vice President noted that achieving universal access to healthcare requires more than infrastructure and medical expertise; it demands systems that protect citizens from the financial burden of serious illness; the exact role the Ghana Medical Trust is playing.

Her remarks reinforce a growing national consensus: healthcare should not be a privilege reserved for those who can afford it. Every Ghanaian deserves access to life-saving care, regardless of their financial circumstances.

As Ghana continues to strengthen its healthcare system, the Ghana Medical Trust Fund stands as a symbol of hope, equity, and social protection; ensuring that the nation's pursuit of Universal Health Coverage leaves no one behind.

Because when access to healthcare is guaranteed, lives are saved, families are protected, and the nation grows stronger.

Building a Healthier Ghana Together

The Ghana Medical Trust Fund (GMTF), led by its Administrator, Adjoa Obuobia Darko-Opoku, is proud to participate in the Ministry of Health's 2026 Annual Health Summit in Accra under the theme: "Building a Resilient Health Workforce to Accelerate the Attainment of Universal Health Coverage."

As Ghana works towards ensuring quality healthcare for all, the role of the Ghana Medical Trust Fund has become increasingly important. By providing financial support for the treatment of chronic and life-threatening illnesses, the Fund is helping to remove one of the biggest barriers to healthcare—cost.

The journey to Universal Health Coverage is not only about building hospitals and training health professionals; it is also about ensuring that no Ghanaian is denied life-saving care because of financial hardship. Through partnerships with healthcare professionals, institutions, and communities, the Ghana Medical Trust Fund is helping to turn that vision into reality.

Our presence at this year's summit reflects our commitment to strengthening Ghana's healthcare system and supporting efforts that give every citizen a fair chance at a healthy and productive life.

Together, we can build a resilient health system where hope, care, and opportunity are accessible to all.

WHY WE EXIST

No mother should have to choose between caring for her child and paying for life-saving treatment.

No child should lose their chance at life because help came too late or treatment was out of reach.

Behind every diagnosis is a family carrying a burden they should not have to bear alone.

This is why we exist.

At the ongoing Ghana-UK Investment Summit in London, Administrator of the Ghana Medical Trust Fund, Adjoa Obuobia Darko-Opoku, used the remarkable recovery story of 3-year-old Delshad Alukure to rally global support for the Fund.

Born with life-threatening heart conditions, Delshad's future seemed uncertain until the Ghana Medical Trust Fund stepped in to finance his life-saving surgery. Today, he is healthy and thriving.

Citing Delshad's transformation as evidence of the Fund's impact, the Administrator called on development partners, investors, philanthropists, corporate organisations, and the Ghanaian diaspora to support the initiative, stressing that thousands of Ghanaians battling chronic diseases still need access to life-saving care.

“Delshad's story shows what is possible when financial barriers to healthcare are removed," she told delegates.

The Administrator of the Ghana Medical Trust Fund, Obuobia Darko-Opoku, over the next two days, joins investors, policymakers, business leaders and development partners at the Ghana–UK Investment Summit 2026 to spotlight the urgent need for sustainable financing for specialised healthcare for non-communicable diseases.

With NCDs such as cancer, accounting for nearly half of all deaths in Ghana, the Trust Fund will be engaging agencies, organisations, corporate institutions and impact investors to help bridge the gap in access to specialised care.

The conversation will be simple: how can we work together to ensure that no Ghanaian is denied life-saving specialist treatment because of cost?

A shared investment in healthcare of Ghanaians

The Ghana Medical Trust Fund was pleased to welcome the leadership of SIC Insurance PLC, who visited the Fund today and made a generous contribution of GHC 200,000 in support of improving healthcare delivery in Ghana.

Partnerships with corporate Ghana like these, remind us that the commitment to a healthier nation is a collective responsibility. We are grateful for SIC Insurance PLC’s support and their commitment to helping improve access to specialised healthcare for Ghanaians.

Together, we are financing hope and restoring lives.

We are supporting patients throughout Ghana by partnering with 29 hospitals across the country

This means, no longer do families have to bear the cost of long distance travel to get help.

This means less strain on the system, more even distribution, allowing for greater care being delivered.

This is real tangible progress. This is the new face of critical NCD care in Ghana.
