Western North Regional Minister Calls for Urgent Action to Reduce Maternal Deaths

The Western North Regional Minister, Wilbert Petty Brentum, has called on stakeholders across the region to make maternal health a priority and support efforts to save the lives of pregnant women.

The call follows the Western North Regional Health Directorate’s 2026 mid-year performance review, which revealed that 16 maternal deaths were recorded between January and June 2026.

The Regional Minister described the situation as unfortunate and urged religious leaders, traditional authorities, community leaders and other stakeholders to intensify public education and awareness on maternal health.

According to him, it is deeply worrying for a woman who is expected to give birth and bring new life into the world to lose her own life in the process.

He said the Health Directorate had identified the challenges contributing to maternal deaths and was intensifying efforts to address them.

Mr. Brentum therefore urged all stakeholders and residents in the Western North Region to support health professionals and collaborate with the Regional Health Directorate to reduce preventable maternal deaths.

He stressed that collective action, increased awareness and timely access to healthcare would be critical in protecting the lives of mothers and ensuring safer childbirth across the region.

World Breastfeeding Week 2026

The Western North Regional Health Directorate joins the rest of Ghana and the global community in commemorating World Breastfeeding Week 2026, under the theme:

"Breastfeeding for a Sustainable Start in Life: Strengthen What Works."

As part of this year's observance, the Ghana Health Service (GHS) is calling for stronger family and community support for nursing mothers. Breastfeeding is not solely the responsibility of mothers; it is a shared responsibility that requires the commitment of families, healthcare providers, employers, communities, policymakers, and the media.

Breastfeeding gives every child the best possible start in life. Breast milk provides vital nutrients, protects infants against life-threatening illnesses such as diarrhoea and pneumonia, reduces the risk of allergies, supports brain development, and promotes healthy facial and dental growth.

This year's campaign highlights the need to build on successful interventions, strengthen support systems, and ensure that every mother receives the encouragement and care needed to breastfeed successfully.

This August and beyond, let us stand with every breastfeeding mother. Together, we can protect what works, strengthen support networks, and ensure that no mother or child is left behind.
The region is engaging nursing mothers, community members, creating awareness through radio stations, CWCs, churches and mosques.
Breastfeeding is not the responsibility of mothers alone. It is a shared national responsibility.
