Today is International Nurses Day!!!

Nurses are the heartbeat of Medicas and on this special day, we want to acknowledge their hard work, patience, love and care.
As we celebrate this day, we also mark the birth of a remarkable woman, the mother of Medicas and the one who keeps all the pieces moving together. She is also one of the best nurse - if not the best nurse on the continent. She was born a nurse and it is no surprise she was born on this day.
She is our very own Florence Nightingale - Mama Augusta Ghartey [ Head Nurse of Medicas Hospital ].

Happy Birthday and Happy International Nurses Day

Take this opportunity to show gratitude to a nurse who has taken care of you.Let us know what a nurse has done for you.

The Medicas team wishes all mothers a very happy mothers day!God richly bless you for your love, care and affection.

Dental care within the elderly community is very important to their overall health care. Majority of our elders have missing teeth which sometimes affect their ability to properly masticate their foods which ultimately affect their digestive system.
Most people loose their teeth due to periodontal problems, i.e. gum disease which affects the supporting bone surrounding the teeth.
Make sure you check on your elderly ones and ensure periodic dental checks for them.

How will you know when your elderly parents need help?
Parents wouldn't want to become burdens to their children or loved ones so unless something triggers this realisation, they may be neglected. Some of such triggers may be suffering a stroke, injury due to a fall or the onset of dementia.
The following may be indicators that your parents need professional help
1. When your parents have difficulty with or are incapable of performing daily activities such as:
-Bathing. -walking. -toileting. -eating. - dressing and grooming
2. Consistent memory lapses eg. forgets that he has eaten
3. Noticeable weight loss
4. Bruises on body due to falls
Many elders are in denial that they need help therefore the responsibility lies with the primary care givers to pick up these early warning signs and seek the necessary help.
SO WHY NOT LET THE PROFESSIONALS HANDLE IT?

April 7 annually is world health day; and this year the focus is on Diabetes Mellitus (DM). How to beat Diabetes, its prevention, strengthen care and enhance surveillance.
DM is a group of metabolic disorders characterized by high blood glucose.
DIABETES IN THE ELDERLY
The elderly who suffer DM may have peculiar challenges with their care.
1. Dietary: they may be under the care of a primary care giver who may not fully understand the disease and its implications and thus may not fully implement the dietary plan as prescribed by the Diet therapist.
2. Drugs: Some drugs such as Daonil are particularly notorious for causing hypoglycemia (very low blood glucose) among elderly diabetics. this therefore restricts the drug options available for use in the elderly.
complications from poly pharmacy (giving many different drugs) are more prominent.
3. Physical lifestyle changes: regular physical activity impacts positively on control of diabetes and the development of complications. The elderly are however limited in their in terms of how much physical activity they can undertake.
4. As a result of the presence of other medical conditions, early signs of the development of complications of diabetes may be missed in the elderly.
