AFREhealth AI Specialist Dr. Brian Halubanza delivered a lightning talk at the Deep Learning Indaba, hosted by Pan-Atlantic University in Lagos, Nigeria.
Titled “From Isolated Training to Shared Capacity, Open AI Education for Africa’s Health Workforce,” the presentation addressed the growing gap between the rapid adoption of artificial intelligence and institutional readiness across Africa’s health sector.
Dr. Halubanza highlighted the need to move beyond attendance-based AI training towards competence-based education. Health professionals must be able to assess the accuracy, bias and relevance of AI outputs, protect patient information, apply AI appropriately and remain accountable for their decisions.
He proposed an open African repository of adaptable curriculum modules, clinical and community cases, assessment tools and faculty-development resources. Such a platform would reduce duplication, strengthen local relevance and support collaboration across institutions.
The presentation reflects AFREhealth’s commitment to strengthening health professions education through responsible digital innovation. Africa needs a health workforce that can use AI safely, critically and ethically while preserving human judgement and professional responsibility.
