Read our latest publication, "Low Vision Services in Sub-Saharan Africa: A Systematic Review," published in Frontiers in Health Services as part of the HM KNUST Low Vision project at Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST).

Our review highlights an important reality: while low vision interventions can significantly improve functional vision and quality of life, access to comprehensive low vision services remains limited and unevenly distributed across Africa. Key barriers include inadequate infrastructure, limited specialist training, high costs of assistive devices, low awareness, and persistent stigma associated with vision impairment. At the same time, the evidence points to clear opportunities for improvement through workforce development, low vision service integration, affordable assistive technologies, and stronger public awareness initiatives.

We are privileged to host distinguished speakers: Dr. Kwadwo Owusu Akuffo and Prof. Werner Eisenbarth, co-principal investigators of the HM KNUST Low Vision project and Prof. Mohammed Abdul-Kabir, Head of the Optometry Department at KNUST for the West African Low Vision workshop. Their combined expertise in clinical optometry, public health, and vision rehabilitation will provide valuable insights into the success of this program.

The West African Low Vision workshop will be held on Feb. 27- Mar. 1, 2026 at the Mastercard Impact Building at KNUST, Kumasi, Ghana. This initiative continues our commitment to strengthening rehabilitation services and building sustainable capacity for vision care in the Ashanti Region, Ghana. The program will highlight the progress of established low vision centers in Kumasi and discuss strategies for scaling sustainable, patient-centered rehabilitation services across Ghana. Clinical optometrists, ophthalmologists, students, and stakeholders in eye care are warmly invited to engage in this important workshop. We also extend our gratitude to Else Kroner Fresenius Stiftung for funding this project.

The HM KNUST Low Vision Project with support from the Else Kröner-Fresenius-Stiftung, is pleased to announce the maiden edition of the West African Low Vision Workshop 2026.

This regional workshop aims to strengthen low vision care across West Africa by fostering clinical excellence, interdisciplinary collaboration and evidence-based practices. It will bring together clinicians, researchers, educators and policymakers committed to improving visual health outcomes in underserved communities.

Through panel discussions, hands-on workshops, and knowledge-sharing sessions, participants will explore innovative strategies for delivering equitable and sustainable low vision rehabilitation services.
