LET’S TALK ABOUT FOLIC ACID

Many people hear about folic acid only during pregnancy, but the truth is, it is important for everyone, especially women of reproductive age.

Folic acid helps in:
✔️ Formation of healthy blood cells
✔️ Proper growth and development
✔️ Brain and nervous system function
✔️ Prevention of certain birth defects during pregnancy

One thing many women quietly struggle with is taking their folic acid tablets regularly. Some complain about:
1 The smell of the medication
2 Nausea after taking it
3 Forgetfulness
4 Fear of taking “too many drugs” during pregnancy
5 Not understanding why they should take it before pregnancy

Some women even stop taking it completely because the smell makes them uncomfortable or increases morning sickness.

But here are some practical tips that may help:
✅ Take it after meals instead of on an empty stomach
✅ Take it at night before bed if the smell or nausea is disturbing
✅ Keep the medication in a cool, dry place
✅ Set phone reminders or ask a family member to remind you
✅ Add more natural folate-rich foods to your meals daily
✅ Start antenatal care early and ask questions whenever you do not understand something

Food sources of folate include:
🥬 Kontomire and spinach
🫘 Beans and lentils
🥑 Avocado
🍊 Citrus fruits
🥜 Groundnuts
🥚 Eggs
🥣 Fortified cereals and flour products

Sometimes, small daily habits can make a big difference for both mother and baby.

Food is not just for satisfaction, it is medicine, prevention, and protection💚

Every pregnant woman deserves a safe pregnancy and safe delivery. 💜

Today, on Preeclampsia Awareness Day, we shine light on a condition that silently threatens the lives of many mothers and babies.

Preeclampsia can develop after 20 weeks of pregnancy and is commonly associated with high blood pressure, swelling, headaches, blurred vision, and protein in urine.

Sadly, many women ignore the symptoms until complications arise.

🩺 Early antenatal care attendance, regular monitoring, proper nutrition, and timely treatment are key to prevention and management.

🥗 Good nutrition matters:
✔️ Eat balanced meals
✔️ Increase fruits and vegetables
✔️ Limit excess salt and processed foods
✔️ Stay hydrated
✔️ Follow professional dietary guidance

Awareness saves lives. Screening saves lives. Antenatal care saves lives.

Let us protect mothers and babies together. 💜

Today, on World Hypertension Day 🩺❤️

Let us remember that good health is one of life’s greatest blessings. Hypertension (high blood pressure) is often silent, yet it can lead to serious health complications when left unchecked.

This is a call for all of us to be more intentional about our health: ✨ Check your blood pressure regularly
✨ Reduce excessive salt intake
✨ Eat healthy and stay active
✨ Manage stress effectively
✨ Prioritize adequate rest
✨ Encourage family and friends to do same

A healthy lifestyle today can protect your future tomorrow.

Your health matters. Your heart matters ❤️

On this World Hypertension Day, let us prioritize our health by checking our blood pressure regularly, eating healthy, reducing salt intake, staying active, managing stress, and encouraging others to do same.
Healthy hearts, healthier lives ❤️

Non-communicable diseases (NCDs) cannot be discussed without highlighting the critical role of nutrition. Proper nutrition remains one of the most powerful tools for preventing and managing NCDs such as hypertension, diabetes, obesity, and cardiovascular diseases

Small changes in meal planning can make a big difference. Think variety, think balance, think nutrition.

A few days ago, I found myself reflecting on something we see every day but rarely question.

In many of our communities, it is easier to buy a sugary drink than to find clean drinking water.
It is easier to grab fast food than to access affordable, nutritious meals.
It is easier to live sedentary than to find safe, accessible spaces for physical activity.

And then we tell people to “make healthier choices.”

This is why the statement by Catharina Boehme resonates so strongly: we are making it too easy to be unhealthy and too difficult to be healthy.

As a public health professional, I’ve come to understand that obesity is not just about individual responsibility—it is shaped by the systems we live in.

If we truly want to address this challenge, then our focus must go beyond awareness to action:
• Strengthening prevention
• Implementing policies that protect and inform
• Ensuring equitable and sustainable access to care

Because the truth is, people don’t just choose their behaviors—their environments shape those choices.

It’s time we build systems that make the healthy choice the easy choice.
