May Day 2026 – Workers across both the public and private sectors must benefit from the prosperity that a Treaty will deliver says Unite the union.
Unite, the union for workers in Gibraltar, have in advance of the May Day celebrations at Campion Park on 1st May highlighted the importance of workers across both the public and private sectors benefiting from the economic benefits delivered by the Treaty on the future relationship with the European Union. The annual May Day Rally held by the union will commence at 11am until 3pm at Campion Park on Friday 1st May with a range of union speakers, plus entertainment for adults and children. Speakers will celebrate the achievements of the last twelve months, as well as addressing issues of the Living Wage, the challenges for workers in both the public and private sectors, job insecurity and issues impacting young workers.
Louis Gonzalez, Regional Officer for Unite Gibraltar stated: “As always it is an honour to celebrate International Workers’ Day and on a public holiday, long may this practice continue. I am also delighted to speak at my first May Day Rally as Regional Officer for Unite as it is a privilege to represent those that live and work in Gibraltar. Workers in Gibraltar have weathered the storm of Covid, pay constraints and spiralling inflation, but we now have economic prosperity on the horizon in the form of the Treaty. It is imperative that those living and working in Gibraltar benefit and share from the economic dividends that are realised by the Treaty, notwithstanding the potential headwinds arising from global events outside of the control of working people.
The resolution to the public sector pay dispute in 2025 and the agreement that arose from that are beginning to bear fruit with positive progress being made with HMGOG and initial dialogue having commenced on the matter of the Gibraltar Living Wage Commission. Many of the issues addressed in the Dispute Resolution Agreement have the potential to be transformative in both the public and private sectors."
Ann Smith, Chair of Unite Gibraltar stated ”I am very proud to be addressing my first May Day as Chair of Unite Gibraltar and key amongst my address will be recognising some of the achievements of Unite Gibraltar in the last twelve months, whilst as ever recognising the work that still needs to be done. The next few weeks will be pivotal in the negotiations around public sector pay and should these negotiations land positively then we could reach a landmark agreement which benefits both the public and private sectors. The flipside of this is that Unite & HMGOG need to get sharper at dispute resolution and avoidance, good industrial relations are vital and there is much pending positive work between Unite & HMGOG in workplaces and in developing progressive employment legislation.
I also want to wish all Unite members and all those living and working in Gibraltar a Happy May Day, whilst as ever recognising that many of our members will be working on this public holiday and Unite Gibraltar thanks them and all workers for their contributions. We look forward to seeing members and their families at the May Day Rally and enjoying the entertainment”.
In addition to speakers, there will be entertainment in the form of a DJ, a Jumping Castle and other activities for children including party bags, plus Unite freebies for members and attendees.
