Collective Bargaining Delivers Results in the Private Sector

Unite the Union has successfully negotiated a number of pay agreements across the private sector in recent months, delivering tangible benefits for its members. The union is also close to concluding pay negotiations with Mitie and expects to reach an agreement in the coming weeks.

Employees at Boluda Gibraltar secured a 2.9% pay increase, backdated to 1 January. In addition, they received a one-off, non-consolidated bonus at the end of the year, averaging £500 per employee.

Employees at Restsso achieved a 3% pay increase, also backdated to 1 January. They further benefited from a one-off payment of £500. Importantly, Unite negotiated a protective clause within the agreement to ensure that hourly paid employees remain 10p per hour above the statutory minimum wage should future increases to the minimum wage exceed their current rate of pay.

Unite's Christian Duo said: "Collective bargaining remains the most effective tool for securing fair pay, protecting workplace rights, and resolving disputes collectively. We are pleased to have delivered improvements to the pay, terms, and conditions of our hardworking members in the private sector, many of whom are among the lower-paid workforce.

The private sector continues to offer significant opportunities for trade union growth, with many workplaces still unorganised. Unite's objective should be to ensure a greater balance in the allocation of union resources, providing strong support to both the public and private sectors alike."

May Day 2026 – Workers across both the public and private sectors must benefit from the prosperity that a Treaty will deliver says Unite the union.

Unite, the union for workers in Gibraltar, have in advance of the May Day celebrations at Campion Park on 1st May highlighted the importance of workers across both the public and private sectors benefiting from the economic benefits delivered by the Treaty on the future relationship with the European Union. The annual May Day Rally held by the union will commence at 11am until 3pm at Campion Park on Friday 1st May with a range of union speakers, plus entertainment for adults and children. Speakers will celebrate the achievements of the last twelve months, as well as addressing issues of the Living Wage, the challenges for workers in both the public and private sectors, job insecurity and issues impacting young workers.

Louis Gonzalez, Regional Officer for Unite Gibraltar stated: “As always it is an honour to celebrate International Workers’ Day and on a public holiday, long may this practice continue. I am also delighted to speak at my first May Day Rally as Regional Officer for Unite as it is a privilege to represent those that live and work in Gibraltar. Workers in Gibraltar have weathered the storm of Covid, pay constraints and spiralling inflation, but we now have economic prosperity on the horizon in the form of the Treaty. It is imperative that those living and working in Gibraltar benefit and share from the economic dividends that are realised by the Treaty, notwithstanding the potential headwinds arising from global events outside of the control of working people.

The resolution to the public sector pay dispute in 2025 and the agreement that arose from that are beginning to bear fruit with positive progress being made with HMGOG and initial dialogue having commenced on the matter of the Gibraltar Living Wage Commission. Many of the issues addressed in the Dispute Resolution Agreement have the potential to be transformative in both the public and private sectors."

Ann Smith, Chair of Unite Gibraltar stated ”I am very proud to be addressing my first May Day as Chair of Unite Gibraltar and key amongst my address will be recognising some of the achievements of Unite Gibraltar in the last twelve months, whilst as ever recognising the work that still needs to be done. The next few weeks will be pivotal in the negotiations around public sector pay and should these negotiations land positively then we could reach a landmark agreement which benefits both the public and private sectors. The flipside of this is that Unite & HMGOG need to get sharper at dispute resolution and avoidance, good industrial relations are vital and there is much pending positive work between Unite & HMGOG in workplaces and in developing progressive employment legislation.

I also want to wish all Unite members and all those living and working in Gibraltar a Happy May Day, whilst as ever recognising that many of our members will be working on this public holiday and Unite Gibraltar thanks them and all workers for their contributions. We look forward to seeing members and their families at the May Day Rally and enjoying the entertainment”.

In addition to speakers, there will be entertainment in the form of a DJ, a Jumping Castle and other activities for children including party bags, plus Unite freebies for members and attendees.

GFRS members take their protest to Parliament, will pause the demonstrations and call for constructive engagement says Unite

Unite, the union for workers in Gibraltar, have announced that Gibraltar Fire & Rescue Service members will be taking their demonstration and protest to Parliament today (30th March). Following four weeks of consecutive protests at No.6 where there has been no engagement from Government or Officials, the GFRS membership will set off from the Fire Station at 9.30am and march to Parliament where they will protest up to midday. The purpose of protesting outside of the parliamentary session is to draw cross-party attention to their claim and dispute.

The Unite the union GFRS membership have then decided to pause their demonstrations and protests for the Easter period as a sign of goodwill and to provide the opportunity for HMGOG to engage directly with the union and Unite GFRS representatives.

Stuart Davies, National Officer for Unite Gibraltar stated: “Members have taken a loud, visual and good natured protest to No.6 for the last four weeks which has been met with significant support; however there is disquiet that there has been no engagement from HMGOG, no-one from Government to meet and address the demonstration, no formal correspondence with the union and just a string of press releases. This is why our members are taking their protest and demonstration to Parliament to draw that cross-party attention to the dispute.

“Following the demonstration today, the membership have agreed to pause the cycle of demonstrations as a sign of goodwill and to invite HMGOG to re-engage with Unite and our representatives on dispute resolution. HMGOG have repeatedly stated in their communications that they remain open to constructive engagement, but will not be moved by pressure tactics. So I have today written to HMGOG to advise that our membership will be temporarily standing down across Easter and the ball will be in HMGOG’s court as to that constructive engagement that they have repeatedly cited and to enter into positive dialogue”.
