Homes change over time as they are lived in. This is only natural. Life inhabits space, not the other way around. With existing spaces, and conversions there are always constraints. What is most important apart from design, is attention to quality of construction with good craftmenship, that stands the test of time, and the client's understanding in supporting it all the way. After 18 years, I am proud this apartment is still making its inhabitants happy. One of my favourite projects.

142 χρόνια πρίν, στις 19 Μαρτίου 1882, ξεκίνησε η κατασκευή της Sagrada Família, στην Βαρκελώνη με τα σχέδια του αρχιτέκτονα Francisco de Paula del Villar. Ο Villar παραιτήθηκε και ένα χρόνο αργότερα το έργο ανέλαβε ο Antoniο Gaudi ο οποίος αφιέρωσε όλη του την ζωή στο έργο αυτό. Ειχε το δικό του όραμα, και έκανε τα δικά του σχέδια για τον καθεδρικό ναό, άρχισε να μένει μέσα στο εργοτάξιο, και δεν θέλησε ποτέ να το εγκαταλείψει, μέχρι που μια μέρα η ζωή του διακόπηκε απροσδόκητα όταν τον παρέσυρε ένα τραμ. Ένα μοναδικό μνημείο, παγκόσμιας αξίας, ενός εμβληματικού και πρωτοπόρου αρχιτέκτονα, που έμεινε ανολοκλήρωτο και αναμένεται να ολοκληρωθεί το 2026, ίσως και το 2030. Δεν έχει απολύτως καμία ευθεία γραμμή, και είναι ο υψηλότερος καθεδρικός ναός στον κόσμο. Όταν ρωτούσαν τον Gaudi πότε θα τελειώσει το έργο, έλεγε πως "ο πελάτης μου δεν βιάζεται", αναφερόμενος στον Θεό. Όταν ξενάγησε τον βασιλιά της Ισπανίας Αλφόνσο ΧΙΙΙ, στο εργοτάξιο, και εκείνος τον ρώτησε γιατι τόσο ύψος, ο Gaudi απάντησε: "επιθυμούμε να φιλήσουμε τον Ουρανό". Ο Gaudi, έπασχε από αρθρίτιδα απο πολύ μικρή ηλικία, και γιαυτόν το λόγο ήταν περιορισμένος στις κινήσεις του, έκανε για θεραπευτικούς λόγους βόλτες στην φύση, ή παρατηρούσε τα δέντρα επι ώρες από το παράθυρο του σπιτιου του. Γιαυτόν 'πρωτοτυπία' ήταν η επιστροφή στην 'πηγή', στην προέλευση. Αυτό σημαίνει πρωτότυπες λύσεις, η επιστροφή με τα μέσα που κανείς διαθέτει, στην απλότητα της προέλευσης των πράγμάτων και των λύσεων που αυτές δίνουν, εννοώντας την ίδια την φύση. Το μνημείο αυτό είναι φόρος τιμής στην πίστη του. Όλη του η ζωή, είναι παράδειγμα της δύναμης της πίστης, και της σοφίας της ιδιοφυίας που ξέρει να παρατηρεί, να συνθέτει με μοναδικό τρόπο, και να εμπνέει. Κοιτάζοντας τις παλιές φωτογραφίες της αρχής της ανέγερσης του ναού, μόνο τότε καταλαβαίνει ή αναλογίζεται κανείς, πόση πίστη και αφοσίωση απαιτεί ένα πρωτότυπο έργο, σύλληψη ιδέας, για να υλοποιηθεί.

Luxury nowadays is time and space. Luxury is not necessarily related to money. How does architecture respond to this experience? We miss the pleasure in the experiencing of architecture, because we do not allow for time and space in the designing process to reach its maximum potential. Pleasure is what we are experiencing mainly through our senses. The way the architect is employed today, the tight deadlines and restrictions of brief. The plans that have to be ready by tomorrow, give no time for that special process of creating and researching to evolve and operate in synergy with the natural rhythm of processing information and making the right choices. So, we miss on innovation and we also miss on foresight...The work on the overlap of typologies and programmes and the ways of experiencing and inhabiting space that are in alignment with nature, in alignement with our nature. We miss designing and building with a "soul". We are in need for a more conscientious architecture and built environment that allows for time and space, to let life breath and feel! No matter what we design, how big or small it is, be it a piece of furniture, a small appropriation in an appartment, a room, a house, a bathroom, or a larger project, pacing ourselves with mindfulness about the user, the client, or the passer by, developing a connection with their own needs and experience is crucial to achieve a result that is of value and will be fully appreciated. This is what luxury and beauty is all about. The custom made experience. Giving things the time and space they deserve, the attention they deserve.
