Meet Dr. Fukushi Masaichi — a physician who has collected over 2,000 traditional Japanese tattoos between 1920s to 1940s, of which only 105 survived WWII and now preserved at the University of Tokyo.
In the realm of irezumi, each bodysuit is a testament to a lived experience (mostly former Yakuza). He never “collect” a tattoo without consent; rather, he became a guardian of these stories entrusted to his hands.
🙏 Dr. Tattoo, the wearers, and the artists who ignites my devotion to preserving this beautiful art form—one that stands on the edge of fading into silence.
