[HKIS QSD CPD Event: AI × 5D BIM – A Milestone of Digital Transformation in Quantity Surveying]

Held last evening (12 October 2026), our latest QS Division CPD seminar drew an overwhelming response from members, welcoming around 200 attendees, joining both in person at the Surveyors Learning Centre and online via Zoom!

The session kicked off with an inspiring opening remark by Ms Moon LAN, Deputy General Manager of Glodon (Hong Kong) Software Ltd. We were then honoured to hear from Mr. King WU, Technical Manager at Glodon Hong Kong, who shared deep insights into how cutting-edge technology is reshaping our profession.

The seminar delivered a broad and practical look into the QS industry's evolving landscape:

Industry Pain Points: Addressing the hurdles of complex drawing interpretation (especially reinforcement detailing) and the traditional gap between BIM models and QS measurement rules.

Digitalisation Trends: The broader momentum driving smarter, technology-integrated workflows across Hong Kong's construction sector.

AI Application Scenarios: Exploring how AI empowers various project stages—from early design to cost management and construction.

QuantifAI vs. Cubicost: A compelling feature and performance comparison highlighting major functional improvements and application reliability.

The presentation was followed by a lively and engaging interactive Q&A session, where attendees actively exchanged practical insights, and tackled pressing industry challenges with our speaker.

Sr Eric TING (Chairman of QSD) and Sr Sunny CHOI (Chairman of QSD Digitalisation Sub-committee & Past Chairman of QSD) presented souvenirs to Ms Moon LAN and Mr. King WU to express our sincere appreciation.

QSD PQSL Contract Administration Series 2026 (6) – Basic Principles of Payment Valuation (9 October 2026)

We were delighted to have Sr Rico Wah, an Associate Director from Currie & Brown (China) Limited by walking through the fundamental mechanics of construction payments, focusing on three core pillars: Understand, Apply, Judge.

During the session, Sr Wah provided a practical valuation checklist, detailing how to systematically execute each step during a payment valuation: 1) Confirm Contract Clauses, Appendix and Amendments, 2) Set the Valuation Date and Evidence Plan, 3) Reconcile Application, Site Records and Project-Team Information, 4) Assess Work Done Independently, 5) Check On-Site Materials for Eligibility and Protection, 6) Apply Preliminaries, Nominated Parties, Retention and Deductions Correctly, 7) Document Judgement, Assumptions and Support, 8)Meet Recommendation and Certification Deadlines.

Sr Wah also highlighted the end-to-end payment cycle procedure, which follows five essential stages:

1. Application: The contractor initiates the process by submitting a formal payment application outlining the value of work completed to date.

2. Observation: The quantity surveyor and project team carry out physical site inspections and joint measurements to verify the actual progress and quality of work on-site.

3. Valuation: The quantity surveyor assesses the submitted application against site observations, contract rates, materials on/off-site and necessary variations or adjustments.

4. Certification: The contract administrator formally issues a payment certificate confirming the net approved amount due to the contractor.

5. Payment: The employer settles the certified amount within the contractual payment period, completing the transaction cycle.

A big thank you to Sr Rico Wah for delivering such an informative session and a souvenir has been arranged as a token of appreciation!

CPD: Visit to the Hong Kong-Shenzhen Innovation and Technology Park 港深創新及科技園 (19 September 2026)

On 19 September 2026, the HKIS QSD CPD Sub-Committee organised an insightful site visit to the Hong Kong–Shenzhen Innovation and Technology Park (HSITP). The event gave participants a firsthand look at the development of a world-class innovation and technology hub and an industry–academia–research platform bridging Hong Kong and the Chinese Mainland. The session helped bridge the gap between large-scale technological infrastructure planning and practical quantity surveying workflows.

The visit was enriched by presentations from Sr Kenneth Chan, Associate Director (Contracts Management), and Sr Sammuel Yung, Manager (Contracts Management), both from HSITP's Project Development Division. Drawing on their extensive expertise in project management and cost control, Sr Chan and Sr Yung provided invaluable insights into the commercial ex*****on of this flagship development.

During the site visit, participants toured HSITP's Visitor Centre, Wet Laboratory, and Talent Accommodation, gaining firsthand exposure to the state-of-the-art facilities supporting Phase I, where Buildings 8, 9, and 11 are already operational and five additional buildings are slated for completion by late 2026. The technical sharing session highlighted critical quantity surveying insights, addressing complex procurement strategies, specialised laboratory fit-out considerations, and contract management challenges unique to cross-boundary innovation hubs.

Sr Mandy Ng, Vice Chairman of the HKIS QSD, Sr Betty Lo, Chairperson of the HKIS QSD CPD Sub-Committee cm Council Member of the HKIS QSD, presented certificates of appreciation to Sr Kenneth Chan and Sr Sammuel Yung for their exceptional contributions and warm hospitality.
