The Prechtl’s General Movements Assessment looks at how infants move — not simply what they can do.

This unique shift in perspective helps clinicians recognise early signs of neurodevelopmental risk during the first months of life, before many traditional assessments are able to provide clear answers.

The Prechtl’s General Movements Assessment was developed from the work of Professor Heinz F. R. Prechtl, whose research transformed how clinicians understand spontaneous movement in early infancy.

GMA can be applied from the preterm period through the first 20 weeks corrected age, making it one of the earliest tools available for identifying neurodevelopmental risk.

Together with HINE and MRI, GMA forms part of the recommended pathway for early detection of cerebral palsy.

For clinicians working with high-risk infants, this means risk can be recognised earlier — before functional delays become more obvious.

Earlier detection → earlier monitoring → earlier intervention planning.

And in early development, timing matters.

它可能同時牽涉
感覺耐受、動作協調、 溝通理解、步驟排序、日常流程建立,
以及照顧者如何提示和支援。
所以,兒童不願意刷牙,
未必只是「不合作」。

Lam. et al(2025)一項系統性文獻回顧及統合分析,
探討心理及行為介入方法如何支援自閉症兒童及青少年的口腔衛生。
研究涵蓋 visual pedagogy、social stories、PECS-based approaches、video modelling 及 smart device applications 等策略。

雖然現階段證據確定性仍有限,但研究提示,
結構化、視覺化、感覺友善、照顧者參與及跨專業支援,
對建立口腔護理流程具有重要意義。

這亦正正說明,口腔護理不只是牙科議題,
亦與治療、教育、自理訓練、照顧者支援及跨專業協作密切相關。

本講座將由牙科角度出發,
連結 SEN 兒童口腔護理困難與前線實務,
幫助治療師、教師及其他同工更全面理解孩子的需要。
