Every infant’s movement tells a story.

The Prechtl’s General Movements Assessment helps clinicians observe the quality of an infant’s spontaneous movements during the earliest months of life — a critical window for recognising neurodevelopmental risk.

Not every infant at risk looks "at risk."

Can a 3-month-old baby's movements predict cerebral palsy?
Surprisingly, yes.

Some infants appear to be developing normally during the first few months of life. Yet subtle differences in their spontaneous movements may already provide important clues about brain development.

A five-year study of very low birth weight (VLBW) infants found that the absence of fidgety movements at 3 months post-term was highly predictive of cerebral palsy and was also associated with moderate-to-severe motor, cognitive and language impairment at 2 years of age.

That is why early observation matters.
When these early movement patterns are recognised by trained clinicians, they can support:
✓ Earlier identification of infants at risk
✓ More informed monitoring and follow-up
✓ Timely referral for specialist assessment
✓ Earlier intervention during a critical window of brain development

When clinicians work with infants born very preterm, selecting the right assessment matters.

A 2020 systematic review evaluated six clinical assessment tools used during the first six months of corrected age to predict developmental outcomes at 24 months.

Among the available assessments, the General Movements Assessment (GMA) demonstrated the strongest predictive validity for identifying mild-to-moderate motor and cognitive delays, while the Hammersmith Infant Neurological Examination (HINE) showed excellent predictive accuracy for severe motor delay.

Evidence like this is one reason why GMA has become an important clinical skill in neonatal follow-up, paediatric rehabilitation, and early intervention services worldwide.

Many clinicians associate the Prechtl General Movements Assessment (GMA) with the early identification of cerebral palsy.

But that's only part of the story.
Research suggests that the quality of an infant's spontaneous movements may also provide valuable insights into later cognitive development, particularly in infants born preterm. Rather than reflecting motor function alone, General Movements offer a window into the developing nervous system.

The latest evidence continues to support what experienced clinicians have recognised for years.

A 2024 study published in Developmental Medicine & Child Neurology found that the Prechtl General Movements Assessment (GMA) remains a highly effective tool for predicting neurodevelopmental outcomes in infants at high risk.

Importantly, the study showed that the strongest predictive performance came from assessing both general movement complexity and fidgety movements, reinforcing the importance of comprehensive GMA training rather than relying on a single observation.

For clinicians working with high-risk infants, GMA is more than an assessment—it is a structured clinical skill that strengthens observation, clinical reasoning, and early decision-making during a critical period of brain development.
