Hi buddy,
Here we are, 18 months later.
I feel like time and space have given you knowledge beyond that of a 9 year-old at this point. Being your mom made me infinitely better. At 9, this was a bigger concept than you could ever know or take in. But loving you made me better and increased my perception of what love truly was. Love moves you and gives you the courage and ability to do the hard things. Some days, it’s an absolute sacrifice at times.
The days I wanted to give up. The days and hours it took to drive back and forth to Memphis all those months. Fighting you to eat and take meds, knowing it was in the best interest of your higher good. Learning and teaching myself to have difficult conversations with you, but wording them in ways that made them age appropriate and digestible for you. The creative ways I had to talk about death and dying without directly ever saying “you’re dying” It was all driven and motivated by love. A love that I now believe the cancer experience with you could have taught.
I’ve always known that, but I’ve never really sat with those exact thoughts and mulled them over into how they affected me. Because of you, there is more magic left here, and I see it on the daily. The world that I walk in is now different than the world everyone else experiences. The little things that I notice, the breeze at just the right moment that most everyone else wouldn’t notice. It’s like an extension of our secret club you made for us. Noticing your numbers, the oddities that many would even consider annoyances.
Like I’ve said before to you and Madison many times before, love is the closest thing to magic that most people will ever see or feel. It just feels like you continue to show me a bit more of the magic. The more I see the more you give like a real world version or “hot and cold”.
I love you forever, and thank you for appearing and showing me things, usually when I need them most. Your wish for me was to be happy. … I’m trying, but I’m getting closer. It’s hard giving up the version of what I always thought it would look like. Especially with you not directly here.
Love Always,
Mom
