A major new international analysis suggests that obesity rates may finally be slowing, stabilising, and in some countries even declining — challenging the long-standing narrative of an unstoppable “global obesity epidemic.”

The study, led by researchers from Imperial College London through the NCD Risk Factor Collaboration (NCD-RisC), analysed more than four decades of global health data from 200 countries and territories, covering the period from 1980 to 2024.

Published in the journal Nature, the findings were presented during the European Congress on Obesity (ECO 2026) in Istanbul and provide a more optimistic outlook than many previous global obesity reports.

📊 NEW GLOBAL STUDY PUBLISHED IN NATURE

A major international analysis led by researchers from [Imperial College London](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/?utm_source=chatgpt.com) suggests that obesity rates may be slowing, stabilising, and in some countries even beginning to decline.

The study, published in Nature, analysed health data from more than 232 million people across 200 countries and territories between 1980 and 2024.

Among the key findings:
• Childhood obesity trends stabilised first in many developed nations
• Countries such as France, Italy, and Portugal showed signs of plateau or decline
• The USA continues to report among the world’s highest obesity levels
• Obesity rates continue to rise rapidly in many low- and middle-income countries

Researchers emphasise that obesity trends are not inevitable and that effective public health policies, healthier food environments, and prevention strategies can make a measurable difference.

The findings were presented ahead of the European Congress on Obesity (ECO 2026) in Istanbul.
