Meet Mari, our wonderful guide in Japan. πŸ‡―πŸ‡΅

Mari has been guiding visitors around Japan for many years and loves sharing her country and culture with mindful travelers who genuinely want to learn about Japanese traditions.

She brings so much knowledge to the journey, from Japanese history and culture to food and everyday life. She also translates and interprets throughout the tour, which allows our guests to connect directly with local artists and experts who may not speak English.

Do you take snacks from breakfast buffets? Don’t be shy, tell me in the comments!

I’ll go first: I am flying across Polynesia on tiny propeller planes and short flights. Airports have no restaurants or food, so I learned to pack snacks from breakfast so I have something to eat for lunch.

Sometimes travel teaches you to plan ahead in very practical ways πŸ˜‚

Our guides and local partners are just as important to us as our guests!

We started Solo Female Travelers to change the travel industry and make it more equitable for women, and that continues to be our guiding light.

We care deeply about our guides and all the women who open their doors, their kitchens, their studios and their world to us and our guests. Without them, there would be no Solo Female Travelers. Our tours would simply be the same exact itineraries you can find across the internet.

They matter to us. Their opinions matter to us. Their businesses, their expertise, their stories and their communities matter to us.

This is part of what makes Solo Female Travelers different.

Of course we care about our guests. We obsess over making sure they have an incredible experience. But our guests can never be more important than the women we set out to support, celebrate and spotlight in the first place.

Because creating better travel experiences for women also means creating a more equitable travel industry for the women who make those experiences possible. πŸ’—βœˆοΈ

As always we are heading from Zurich to Vienna, visiting the markets in Zurich, Munich, Salzburg and Vienna, plus enjoying Swiss fondue, a thermal spa morning in Bad Ragaz, Liechtenstein, Neuschwanstein Castle, Hallstatt, a Munich b**r tour, a Christmas cookie cooking class and lots of festive food and warmed mulled w**e along the way. Basically, we take Christmas markets very seriously πŸ˜‚πŸŽ…πŸΌ

Do you ever pause and think about how much of the money you spend on vacation actually stays in the country you are visiting?

Tourism is a huge economic driver and supports millions of jobs around the world. But not all of that money reaches the local communities that make our trips possible. The part that stays with foreign-owned hotels, international tour companies, booking platforms, airlines and other overseas businesses is referred to as tourism leakage.

And some kinds of trips generate a lot more of it than others. Cruises, all-inclusive resorts, safaris and ultra-luxury trips can have especially high leakage, while local workers and businesses may receive only a small portion of what travelers spend.

Of course, tourism leakage can never be completely eliminated. Sometimes an international hotel or booking platform is the easiest or most reliable option, and there is value in that too.

But you CAN do more than you think if you take a little more time before booking your trip, activities and accommodations.

When possible, stay locally owned. Prioritize booking local guides and experiences directly. Eat and drink local. Choose travel companies that pay fairly, work with local businesses and reinvest in the places they visit.

This is something we think about a lot when designing our own tours. Who we work with, where we stay, who guides us, what businesses we support and how much of what our travelers spend actually stays in the destination all matter to us.

It does not have to be perfect. Even making a few more local choices can make a difference.
