🎓 CALIFORNIA UNIVERSITY LAUNCHES THE FIRST BACHELOR'S DEGREE DEDICATED ENTIRELY TO PSYCHEDELIC STUDIES
What was once dismissed as fringe science is now entering accredited higher education.
🍄 The California Institute of Integral Studies (CIIS) in San Francisco has launched what is being described as the first accredited Bachelor of Science degree in Psychedelic Studies in the United States. The online program explores neuroscience, psychopharmacology, psychology, ethics, Indigenous knowledge systems, policy, research methods, and the emerging science of altered states of consciousness.
What's particularly interesting is how dramatically the conversation has shifted.
Just a generation ago, psychedelics were largely associated with counterculture movements and prohibition. Today, some of the world's leading research institutions—including Johns Hopkins University and Imperial College London—are studying their potential role in treating depression, PTSD, addiction, end-of-life anxiety, and other mental health conditions. Clinical trials continue to expand around the world as scientists work to better understand both the benefits and limitations of these compounds.
The degree itself does not require or promote psychedelic use. Instead, it examines these substances through scientific, cultural, historical, legal, and therapeutic lenses. Students study everything from brain function and consciousness research to Indigenous traditions and ethical considerations surrounding modern psychedelic medicine.
Perhaps the deeper story isn't about psychedelics at all.
It's about consciousness.
For centuries, humanity has explored altered states through meditation, dreams, fasting, prayer, plant medicines, breathwork, ritual, and contemplation. What we're witnessing now may be the beginning of a new chapter where universities, healthcare systems, and scientific institutions are taking questions about consciousness as seriously as questions about biology, physics, and medicine.
The human mind remains one of the greatest mysteries we have.
And the more researchers study it, the more they seem to realize how much remains unknown.
Do you think universities should be studying consciousness and psychedelics as legitimate academic fields?
