Good morning, Doctor. Does breastfeeding prevent pregnancy?
Answer:
Breastfeeding can reduce the chance of pregnancy, but it does not completely prevent pregnancy.
A method called the Lactational Amenorrhea Method (LAM) can be up to 98% effective if all three of the following conditions are met:
✅ Your baby is less than 6 months old.
✅ You are exclusively breastfeeding (no formula, water, or solid foods).
✅ Your menstrual periods have not returned since delivery.
If any one of these conditions is not met, pregnancy can occur because ovulation may return before your first menstrual period.
Important Teaching Points
* You can become pregnant before your first postpartum period.
* Breastfeeding is not a reliable long-term contraceptive method by itself.
* Consider using an approved postpartum birth control method if you wish to avoid pregnancy.
* Safe options during breastfeeding include:
* Progestin-only pills (“mini-pill”)
* Contraceptive implant
* Hormonal or copper IUD
* Depo-Provera injection
* Condoms
Med4Life Health Tip
“Breastfeeding may delay fertility, but it is not a guarantee against pregnancy. If you do not want another pregnancy soon, use an effective contraceptive method while breastfeeding.”
