A Woman Afoot. The Backpack Is My Cape Hiking While Female: Solo A-kicking in the Mountains. I’m Ioanna, a Woman Afoot – an educator with rediscovered love and passion for wild trails.

I try to fill my life with breath-taking views, nights spent in a tent, the happy fatigue from miles afoot, photography and mindfulness. I chronicle my journey .com – both in terms of trails walked, as well as knowledge and experience gained.

I don't know when will be the next time I go hiking up the mountains.
As all who can, I'm staying at home.
To lift my spirits a bit, I look back at some stunningly beautiful landscapes I had the privilege to witness and explore.
It's early spring, such a fantastic season to explore with the camera close-by.
Escape the dreadful reality with me by watching a few lovely photos from the trails in Catalonia, Spain.

The decision to go hiking in Catalonia was one of the best ideas I’ve had. This varied land surprises you with each step you take. Getting to know it by foot is by far the best way. Take it slowly and enjoy breath-taking views. During my two weeks long trekking, I walked along the GR-5 trail most

Last time I took you to the beautiful Portugal, and this time, to the dramatic shores of the Greek Isle of Crete.
Each day along the southern shore provided unforgettable views and experiences, but the stretch between Paleochora and Sougia was probably the most striking.
It's stunning both in terms of the natural beauty, as much as the richness of cultural heritage.
Click below to see why I loved this hike so much!

The trek from Paleochora to Lissos was one of many on my long-term hiking trip but it is also the perfect destination for a lovely day hike. If you have the time, I highly recommend wild camping in Lissos and going back (or on) the next day – either by walking to Sougia or catching the boat/ferry ...

Facebook keeps reminding me, that at this season I often go hiking in a bit warmer area. A year ago, in Portugal. Two years ago I was on trails in Crete, and the year before - on the Catalonian soil.
Southern Europe tends to be way too hot to hike in the summer, so the early spring or fall are perfect months to enjoy these beautiful countries.
The additional bonus? No crowds and often lower prices for accommodation!
Today I would like to share with you probably my favorite section of the Via Algarviana train in the southern Portuguese region of Algarve.
What's your favorite escape winter destination? Or do you like snow hiking? Let me know!

In February I embarked on a three-week-long hike across Portugal. 300 km on the Via Algarviana trail took me through some remarkable landscapes and tested my body's abilities and mind's strength. In this article, I invite you to read about the section from Silves, through Monchique, to Marmelete. I

Long time no see!
I'm back with a review for you: Rab Electron down jacket. Click below to check out how I liked it.
Read about all the great things about this jacket (spoiler: there were many) and a few downsides (very few).
Do you have this jacket? What are your experiences?
If you own a different one - what is it and would you recommend it to other women?
Rab

I absolutely love this jacket and I can recommend it to hikers and campers. Its mid-weight size and warmth makes it amazingly versatile technical jacket. It provided great insulation during breaks in cold temperatures and cold winds. It was also comfortable when I was hiking in it (with a big backpa

If you are thinking of visiting 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿Scotland 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿(which I highly recommend, it's a stunning hiking destination!), make sure you go to the Isle of Skye. And to be precise: to its northern-most tip - Rubha Hunish.
You won't regret it!

The gorgeous Isle of Skye From the very beginning of my planning, hiking on the Isle of Skye was a given. I saw hundreds of photos and I just had to see with my own eyes to believe such a place could exist in reality. My original plan was to trek through the whole length of the Skye Trail, which t

Do you want to go solo this season? 👣
I have a few good tips for you!

Hiking, especially when done alone, can be a life-changing experience. It brings you serenity and peace of mind. It can give you a significant boost of self-confidence and pride. Hiking solo lets you think freely and to be tuned in to own needs. It makes you focus on yourself, which women rarely hav

Photos from the hike between Szendehely and Ösagárd on the Blue Trail in Hungary. More magic, eerie atmosphere with milky-white air. The trail packs plenty of climbing, but in a way that's not monotonous. As you can see below, a truly beautiful hiking destination.

What a hike! Cold at times, challenging in just the right way, diverse, and mind-blowingly beautiful. Filled with a lot of calmness, solitude, and admiration for the nature around me.
