Can't it be Friday yet? Wednesdays can be such a mood.

Which of these best reflects you? Van Gogh seems to be pretty spot on for us.

Do more things without hesitation!

Remember when we were kids without a care in the world? We'd dive into things without fear or worry if we'd fail or what others might think. Try and channel that childlike spirit today and don't let your inner critic hold you back!

Here's a few ways to put this to the test:
🔊 Voice your opinion in a meeting today
🧦 Step out with odd socks on!
🖼️ Pick up a pencil and sketch something on your desk
📨Send a message to a friend you've not spoken to in a while
⛹️ Do an exercise class you've never done before

What will you do without hesitation? Tell us 👇

The hills are alive... with a giant smiley face :)

Anyone driving along the highway in Oregon, USA, during the fall will be able to see the huge smiley face. The image resembling a smiling emoji or "happy face" was created and planted back in 2011 as part of a reforestation project.

Measuring approx. 300ft in diameter, the plan to replant a variety of native species was highly creative and well thought out taking elevation and soil conditions into account. The eyes and mouth are Douglas Fir while the lighter "yellowish" colour of the face is larch trees. To create the oval shape of the eyes and outer face, the foresters used ropes. It appears annually every fall for the next 30 to 50 years—until the trees are ready to be harvested and processed into lumber.

This is such a great example of how we ALL have the opportunity to be creative in our day jobs. So this week, don't be afraid to explore your creativity and have some fun - you never know how many smiles it may make 😊

Unwind like a Queen 🧶

Taking inspiration from a Hollywood icon Elizabeth Taylor, we'll be curled up on the sofa with our knitting needles this afternoon.

We often marvel at other people's artistic achievements and ingenuity but fail to nurture our own creativity because we assume we don't have what it takes.

Equally, when we think about creative endeavours, we immediately think of the arts but why can't it apply to everything else we do?

In fact, when people are creative it's the process they undertake rather than the content or the craft that makes it creative.

With that in mind, literally anything we do can be approached creatively. Here are some examples:

🍲 replace an ingredient in a recipe you plan to cook with an alternative from your pantry
🏃 Take a different route for your daily run/walk and explore new parts of your neighbourhood
💬 Swap words you use most often with alternative, less well known vocabulary

In other words, approach the ordinary differently today and instead of asking yourself

❌"how creative ARE you?"

ask yourself

✅"how are YOU creative?"

Think of creativity as exercise for your brain 🧠

Just like physical exercise, keeping our brain fit and healthy is also important.

Ruth Richards, a Harvard Medical School researcher, coined the term "everyday creativity" after finding that engaging in creative activities makes us more dynamic, conscious, non-defensive, observant, collaborative, and brave.

Other studies also support this: Students who were engaged in everyday creativity had a greater sense of well-being and personal growth than non-creative classmates.

How will you exercise your brain today?

Monday Motivation: actually, you can.

Is your internal monologue friendly, calm and encouraging – or is it negative, convincing you you can't do something or that if you do, you'll not be good at it?

If it's the latter, fear not- we all experience it!

Here are some helpful ways you can try to quieten or better still silence your inner critic...

👱1. Give your critic a name- By treating it as a person and giving it a name, you can create distance from it and separate it from the truth.

🧠2. Accept your "tricky brain"- we cannot make it go away but we can learn how to respond to it once we accept that it's part of what makes us human.

👂🏼3. Tune into what it's saying- Listen to the voice and write what it says to you down.

📝4. Challenge your critic- Once it's on paper and ask yourself, how accurate is it? What is the evidence to support it?

💞 5. Talk to yourself as you would to a friend- Practice self-compassion and replace the unhelpful and negative words or tone of voice with a kinder, more encouraging narrative.

Above all, remember it's OKAY if you're not feeling your best today. You are not alone. 👇 are some organisations who offer resources that can help:

NEW Unwind LDN Workshop: Flow with the strokes 🌊

The art of handwriting and calligraphy is no longer a staple of primary education, and the more technology we use, we also forget how important it can be to put pen to paper.

Writing helps us:
💪🏾 develop our fine motor skills and improve muscle memory
🔎 focus more on one thing with less distractions
📝 write down our thoughts and process emotions
🤝connect with ourselves and others

During this workshop Annie will teach you the art of brush lettering, guiding you through how letters are formed with easy and relaxing exercises, culminating in a handwritten piece you can feel proud of.

We'll supply your team with the materials, the inspo and the flow, all you need to do is turn up!

Unwind with... Annie 🖋

Calligraphy and brush lettering are our most popular classes here at Unwind LDN. As advanced technology takes over our lives, more people are rediscovering the therapeutic effect of putting pen to paper.

We're thrilled to have on board to showcase the benefits of it for your mental health. She coined the phrase "calligratherapy" and we love it because as she so aptly describes "it's a fantastic practice to help people find a little calm amidst the chaos; you can write away your worries with just 10-15mins of practice a day and learn a new skill in the process"

During Annie's "flow with the strokes" brush lettering class you will receive an at home kit with all the tools you will need to get into this meditative practice.

If you'd like to book a team workshop with Annie, get in touch- we'd love to unwind with you!
