Advanced Seating and Seating Matters were invited to present at the Geriatrics Journal Club in University Hospital Galway this week.

The team shared examples of the importance of clinical seating in acute settings and the positive outcomes that can be achieved when the right seating solution is introduced for the right person at the right time.

There are many benefits of enhanced seating from supporting patient comfort and positioning, to helping reduce falls and pressure injury risks. There are also important considerations around staff safety and helping improve patient flow in busy hospitals.

Our thanks to all involved in organising the session, it was great to be asked to share our clinical knowledge, research and experience.

We'd also like to thank the attendees for the interesting discussions during the Q&A, great to meet all the "Seating Champions" in this group, we're looking forward to the next visit already.

Sometimes, the right seating can change far more than posture.

A community Occupational Therapist contacted Hugh after visiting a long-standing client whose condition had deteriorated significantly. The lady was leaning heavily to one side, with her head resting on her chest, and her carers were struggling to help her eat.

Hugh happened to be nearby and arrived within the hour. With the OT, he trialled a Phoenix chair that was available in his van.

After carefully adjusting the chair, they were able to support the lady’s shoulders, head and overall posture. The difference was immediate: she was able to take food again.

Although non-verbal, she gave a clear thumbs-up to show that she felt comfortable.

One week later, she was still eating and maintaining a much better position. Two months on, she now has her own Phoenix chair, is gaining weight and is noticeably more alert.

Her underlying condition has not changed, but her comfort, positioning and ability to eat have.
Her family told us they believe the intervention that day saved her life. That is something our team feels deeply proud of.

This story is a powerful reminder that specialist seating is never simply about providing a chair. It is about understanding the person, identifying what is preventing them from participating in everyday life, and finding a solution that supports comfort, dignity and independence.

The session featured Seating Matters and Posicare by Seating Matters chairs, giving the OTs an opportunity to explore the different functions, adjustments and clinical considerations behind each seating solution.

These practical demonstrations are a valuable way to share knowledge, discuss real-world seating challenges and support clinicians in identifying solutions that can improve comfort, posture and independence.

Last week, Hugh and Tom were delighted to attend the RAFT (Rehabilitation and Trauma) Network Meeting at the Mater Hospital

The event brought together multidisciplinary trauma and rehabilitation professionals from across Ireland and Northern Ireland to share service developments, research, clinical experiences, and best practice in trauma care.

From trauma service updates and poly-trauma case discussions to presentations on long-term outcomes following major trauma and follow-up services, the day highlighted the importance of collaboration in improving patient journeys from acute care through to community reintegration.

These events provide invaluable opportunities to listen, learn, and engage with the clinicians who work tirelessly to support people through recovery and rehabilitation. As a company committed to improving comfort, posture, mobility, and independence, we are proud to be part of conversations that focus on better outcomes for patients.
