Does your baby cry during bath time or seem really startled in the bath? 🛁

If your newborn hates baths, cries every time, or suddenly flings their arms out with the startle reflex, try this simple newborn bath tip: wrap them in a muslin cloth while bathing. 🫔

A muslin bath wrap can help your baby feel calmer, more secure and contained, rather than in a big open body of water. It can also reduce the startle reflex and make baby bath time feel much more relaxing for everyone 🤍

If you’re struggling with newborn care, baby sleep, feeding or simply wondering if what you’re experiencing is normal, you don’t have to figure it all out alone.

I’m a midwife, children’s nurse and newborn expert supporting families through those early weeks and months.

Today my little guy is not well 🤍

He has a fever and is refusing feeds… and even as a children’s nurse and midwife, it is still so hard for my mama heart to see him sick.

When babies are sick, feeding can suddenly take a turn and they can sometimes start refusing the breast or bottle.

So I thought I’d share what I’m doing today to support him, protect my milk supply and focus on what matters most right now: hydration, comfort and rest.

Inside this carousel I’m sharing:
✨ what I’m doing when he refuses feeds
✨ how I’m getting small amounts of milk into him
✨ what I’m watching for with nappies + hydration
✨ how I’m managing fever + sleep

And a gentle reminder: when little ones are poorly, food matters less than fluids. Small amounts often and lots of cuddles go a long way 🤍

Please remember: this post is for education and sharing what I’m personally doing with my own 8 month old baby. It’s not a replacement for medical advice or assessment. If your baby is not feeding, difficult to wake, has very few wet nappies or you’re worried, please seek medical advice asap.

Feeding your baby is not the only way to bond with them 🤍

I’ve had so many mums recently tell me they want to start pumping so dad can bond with baby too. But pumping can be a lot of work! Washing parts, storing milk, finding time to pump on top of feeding and caring for a newborn… it’s not always the simple solution social media makes it look like.

Bonding isn’t about the bottle. It’s about connection. 🤲🏼

Your partner can absolutely build a beautiful relationship with your baby in so many other ways:
✨ The evening bath
✨ Babywearing on a morning walk
✨ Doing the bedtime story every night
✨ Skin-to-skin cuddles after work
✨ Taking baby out for coffee while you rest
✨ Their own special settling routine

Choose something that becomes their thing.

There are so many ways to love, comfort and connect with a baby that have nothing to do with feeding 🤍

I am frequently reading these two posts in mum groups:
🤗 “I’m so excited, my Doppler will arrive tomorrow!” or
😱 “I’m 12 weeks and I can’t find the heartbeat, help.”

❌ I'm here to tell you, as a midwife and neonatal nurse, don't buy the Doppler.

At 12 weeks, it can be extremely difficult to find a baby’s heartbeat, even for trained professionals. Baby is tiny and moving constantly. Many people end up picking up their own pulse or the placenta and think they’re hearing baby.

I have also seen Dopplers give false reassurance when a baby actually needs help.

📢 A home Doppler cannot tell you if your baby is well. 📢

If your baby’s movements change, reduce, or something simply does not feel right, please do not sit at home trying to “find the heartbeat.” Your need to be contacting your maternity hospital and getting properly assessed.

I know these devices are marketed as reassurance, but in my professional opinion they often increase anxiety, create confusion, and can delay people seeking medical care when they need it most.

Trust your instincts. If you are worried about your baby, go get checked at your maternity hospital.

Send this to a pregnant mom to let them know 💕
