🍀 LET'S TALK HEAD LICE: Facts every Irish parent needs to know! 🛑
There are so many myths about head lice out there, but at Lice Removal Waterford, we know the science behind these little bugs. Here is everything you need to know to understand the problem and protect your family:
🪱 About Head Lice & Nits
What do they look like? Head lice are tiny, flat, wingless insects (about 2-4 mm long). They are pale beige, but turn brownish-red after feeding.
Where do they hide? They live in human hair, mostly nesting around the warmest spots: behind the ears and at the nape of the neck. They need two things to survive: warmth and human blood. Their bites cause itching, and scratching them can sometimes lead to small skin infections.
What about the eggs (nits)? Female lice lay eggs and attach them to the hair shaft right next to the scalp using a incredibly strong, cement-like glue. They look like tiny white/yellowish specks (about 1mm) and are often mistaken for dandruff—but you cannot shake them off! After about a week, they hatch into nymphs, and two weeks later, those new lice start laying their own eggs.
👥 How Do They Actually Spread?
The Truth: Lice CANNOT jump or fly. They don't have wings or springs.
Direct Contact: They spread almost exclusively through head-to-head contact. When children play together, lean over a shared toy, or hug at home, lice simply crawl from one strand of hair to another.
Off the head: A louse separated from a human head dehydrates and dies very quickly (usually within 24 to 48 hours). Eggs can survive off the head a bit longer, but they cannot move or crawl onto anyone. While rare, you can occasionally catch them from sharing fresh pillows, hairbrushes, hats, or helmets within that 48-hour window.
🛡️ How to Fight Back & Win (The Right Way!)
Getting rid of lice permanently is hard work, but completely possible if you follow these golden rules:
1️⃣ Don't panic about deep cleaning the house: Lice cannot live long on furniture or carpets. Your main energy should ALWAYS go into clearing the head. Just change the pillowcases and bath towels (wash at 60°C or a standard cycle), and put helmets, hats, or favourite plush toys aside in a bag for 48 hours.
2️⃣ Check the whole household: If one person has them, there is a high chance someone else does too.
3️⃣ Normal shampoos are not enough: Over-the-counter silicone treatments (like Hedrin, which contain dimethicone) are brilliant and completely safe for babies, pregnant, and breastfeeding mums because they work mechanically, not through toxic pesticides. However, treatments only kill live lice—they do not remove the glued eggs.
