The Oxygen Advantage Breathing Technique by Patrick McKeown

Meet Angie.
In 2021, she laced up for a run and could barely make it past 6K without gasping for air.
She didn't know it yet, but the wall she kept hitting wasn't a fitness problem — it was a breathing problem.

Performance in cycling isn't just about legs and lungs—it's about how you breathe, how you recover, and how you sleep.

Nasal breathing cuts your breathing rate by 22%
39.2 breaths/min (nose) vs 49.4 breaths/min (mouth)—while maintaining VO₂max (Dallam et al., 2018). Six months of nasal training improves CO₂ tolerance and reduces breathlessness under effort.

Mouth breathing = 42% more water loss
Faster dehydration on every ride. Nasal breathing preserves hydration and thermal regulation (Svensson et al., 2006).

Breath holds build altitude adaptation
Breath holds after exhale during hard efforts drop blood O₂ to 88–91%—mimicking training at 3000m altitude (Woorons et al., 2020).

Sleep is a performance lever
30% less sleep = 3% performance drop. Add 90 minutes = 3% gain. Up to 41% of elite cyclists have poor sleep quality (Billyard, 2023). Sleep improvements can add 5–15% to performance—more than most equipment upgrades.

Addressing mouth breathing in kids..
Why do we act like it's "not our place" to say something?

This isn't just about snoring or a noisy sleep. Chronic mouth breathing can affect how a child's face grows, their oral health, and even respiratory health.

A simple, honest heads-up and a quick resource can save someone a lot of damage later.

For the last three months, David "Jacko" Jackson has run an ultramarathon every single day — 50km, at 25 locations across the UK — to raise £1 million for two brain injury charities. He's now in his final two weeks, finishing at Caernarfon Castle on September 5th. We've been following along since May, and we'll be watching right to the finish line.

Having a deviated septum (the line that divides the left side of the nose from the right) is likely to affect airflow. Alternatively, airflow can also be affected if you have a small nose or a compromised airway. If you do physical exercise with your mouth closed while having these issues, you will quickly notice that air hunger is too severe.

This is where a nasal dilator comes in and it can alleviate air hunger. If you are unsure of whether you need a nasal dilator, try the Cottle Maneuver. Place one finger on either side of your nose and gently prise your nostrils. When doing this, you will likely notice it's easier to breathe. The nasal dilator will open up your nose and help you maintain easier nasal breathing so you can reap the benefits.

What's more, you won't feel so restricted and the air hunger won't be so severe. There are two sizes available - medium and large and it is inserted in the nose and designed to stay in during physical exercise.

New research just published in the Slovak Journal of Sport Science shows something we've always believed: functional breathing training works, especially for kids.

Here's what happened:
A primary school in Slovakia integrated breathing exercises into their regular PE lessons for 10 months. They tracked 7 fourth-graders (9-10 years old) using two measurements:

1️⃣ BOLT Score (breathing efficiency + CO2 tolerance)
Started at: 10.57 seconds
Ended at: 14.16 seconds
Improvement: +33.9%

2️⃣ Maximum Breath Hold (respiratory control)
Started at: 35.57 steps
Ended at: 48.29 steps
Improvement: +35.8%

Both improvements were statistically significant. Meaning? Not luck. Real, measurable change.

✅ The kids learned:
• Nasal breathing
• Diaphragmatic breathing
• Breath control
• CO2 tolerance

✅ No special equipment. No major disruptions. Just breathing training as part of normal PE.

✅ After 10 months, their bodies had adapted. Their breathing was more efficient. Their respiratory control was stronger.

This matters because childhood is when breathing habits form. The habits kids develop now often stick around into adulthood. This research shows that schools can teach functional breathing—and kids will measurably improve.

We're glad that Oxygen Advantage principles formed the foundation of this research.

Sleep apnea isn't just about oxygen. It's about airway mechanics.

When you breathe through your nose — slowly, deeply — you change the aerodynamics of your throat. Less turbulent airflow. Better tongue position. Fewer conditions that trigger collapse.

Does this fix severe sleep apnea? No. But does it address one of the root mechanisms? Yes.

Meet Pavol Grman, one of our Master Instructors.

Pavol is a PhD-certified Oxygen Advantage® instructor and co-founder of DEVA PhysioCoaches. His work centers on breathing biomechanics — helping coaches, therapists, healthcare professionals, and athletes understand how breathing shapes posture, movement, core stability, recovery, and performance.

A former professional footballer in Slovakia and Greece, a career-ending injury redirected him toward deep study of movement, breathing, and rehabilitation. Rather than chase a quick return to sport, he invested years understanding how the body actually works — integrating Oxygen Advantage principles with functional biomechanics and Dynamic Neuromuscular Stabilization (DNS) from the Prague School of Rehabilitation.

Today, he partners with elite teams, national sports associations, and coaches and athletes across Slovakia, the Czech Republic, and Greece. He's UEFA B licensed and teaching at every level.

On September 8 he is leading our Advanced Instructor Refresher Sessions on ´The Biomechanics of Breathing in Action´. Your kid can't focus. Won't sit still. Gets anxious before tests. Sleeps poorly.
You've tried everything. But you might be missing the simplest thing: their breathing.
80% of kids mouth breathe. And it's costing them.

But here's the good news: teaching them to breathe through their nose changes everything. Here's what works at different ages..

AGES 5-8: Learn Through Stories
They learn through animal stories. Imagine being a tortoise that breathes slowly and wins the race. Kids love this. They practice ABC and 123 breathing, magic nose unblocking, tunnel steps. Result: calmer, more focused, naturally want to do it.
