Easy bruising? Constant bruising? Unexplained bruising? There are of course other medical causes for this that need to be ruled out but the reason could be connective tissue especially if you know you are hypermobile and/or neurodivergent

Please respect that we cannot provide personalised medical advice on this subject platform. This is a social enterprise being built to provide advocacy, awareness and education for clinicians, patients and their families. We are not running any in person classes or workshops at this time and will announce if that changes.

Do you relate? Have you had the experience of having to be your own expert?

23/08/2026

Yes!!! SO many men are missed too. Mostly because they are told they are “too stiff and tight” to be hypermobile or because hypermobility and connective tissue disorders are more commonly female conditions many men may be missed. We know from research that if you are a neurodivergent male then you have a 50% likelihood of being Hypermobile and perhaps many of the other conditions that tend to go along for the ride . Did you know this? Could this be you and have you been missed / misdiagnosed? We would love to hear from you

This is SO important. This is where we all go wrong. This is my mission to sing from the rooftops as a chartered physiotherapist with a hypermobile (hEDS) body. Breathing & proprioception. AND nothing else. This is where we must begin. This is the only safe way to build a foundation with bodies like mine. Strengthening and stretching as a starting point will do damage though well intentioned it does our bodies harm. It doesn’t mean never stretch or strengthen. It does mean there is a journey to take with these bodies and strengthening is end of the line only when the body is ready. If there is already chronic pain then it may take time to get here. You are healing us with your patience, with your knowledge to go slow. To start here. To trust this process and trust that this and only this is what our bodies need to feel safe and gently build foundations. Please don’t try to strengthen and stretch us first even though that is what you learned in college. It’s what I was taught too but for Bodies Like Mine it is the wrong method to lead with. Foundations first.

This is NOT one size fits all and of course a thorough assessment by an experienced physiotherapist is always important first but more often than not when we are hypermobile and or neurodivergent our pelvic floor is already very tight. It is holding on trying to gain stability. Often our diaphragm is also very tight and we are not breathing effectively. So as physiotherapists it is our job to first focus on breathing, learning to relax already tight and tense muscles NOT to rush straight to strengthening which often times does more harm and adds to pain. Remember there can be leaking or incontinence due to hypertonic muscles that cannot relax it is not always weakness and in these bodies it is more important to find safety, correct breathing and teaching how to relax and let go first. And Hypopressives can be a wonderful follow on if the body is ready.

Bodies Like Mine aims to serve ALL bodies. Yes I am autistic and assigned female at birth and by virtue of both I’m a then more predisposed to a lot of the conditions, symptoms and differences we will discuss. So we have higher rates and this needs to be recognised and looked out for and screened for. If you are female, ND and hypermobile especially. However many other bodies will experience many of the differences and symptoms described here. Thus you belong here too. You can be part of this mission to make change in Ireland. Improved accessibility, improved recognition, improved university training, improved understanding will help us all.

It’s all connected and it’s all CONNECTIVE tissue. We don’t have many seperate issues in many places in our body we have connected issues in our tissues. Jaw symptoms is just one example you may or may not experience as our connective tissue symptoms show up in different areas for each of us.

Noisy background - currently on holidays **

One of the reasons we advocate for better education and better classification criteria is because of all this confusion and the many many missed diagnosis or incorrect fragmented diagnosis. We need easier recognition and better screening tools for primary care practitioners to capture us earlier, understand us earlier and treat us appropriately.
