United Nations Public Service Day recognises the vital contribution that public service makes to societies around the world. From frontline workers and educators to community leaders, volunteers and advocates, public service helps build stronger, more inclusive and resilient communities.

At Soroptimist International Republic of Ireland, service is at the heart of who we are. Through advocacy, education, fundraising and community action, Soroptimists work to improve the lives of women and girls both locally and globally.

Would you like to meet new people, make a positive difference in your community and be part of a global network of women working to improve the lives of women and girls?

Soroptimist International Republic of Ireland is inviting women from across Sligo and the surrounding area to join us for a special information and recruitment evening as we explore the establishment of a new Soroptimist club in Sligo.

Today, on World Refugee Day, we recognise the strength, resilience and courage of millions of people who have been forced to flee their homes due to conflict, persecution and violence.

Women and girls are often disproportionately affected by displacement, facing increased risks and barriers to education, healthcare, employment and safety. As Soroptimists, we believe that every person deserves dignity, opportunity and hope.

Today we stand in solidarity with refugees and recommit ourselves to building communities that are welcoming, inclusive and compassionate.

Words matter.

Hate speech, online abuse and targeted harassment can silence women and girls, especially those who speak out, lead, campaign or take part in public life.

When women are attacked for using their voice, democracy is weakened. Communities are weakened. Equality is weakened.

Countering hate speech is not about silencing debate. It is about protecting dignity, safety and human rights.

As Soroptimists, we stand for women’s voice, agency and leadership. Every woman and girl deserves to be heard without fear, abuse or intimidation.

Respect matters.

We are deeply saddened and shocked by the tragic death of Noreen Daly, a new member of the SI Dungarvan club. Our heartfelt sympathies go to Noreen’s family, friends, and all who knew and loved her. We also extend our thoughts and support to her local community and to our Soroptimist sisters in Dungarvan who are grieving this devastating loss.

As an organisation committed to advancing the rights, status and wellbeing of women and girls, we stand firmly against violence against women in all its forms. While these tragedies can often feel distant, it is particularly heartbreaking and sobering when such violence touches our own community so closely.

At this difficult time, we remember Noreen and stand in solidarity with all those affected by her loss. As Soroptimists, we remain steadfast in our commitment to ending violence against women and girls in all its forms. No woman should lose her life in such a tragic and horrific way. We continue to advocate for a world where every woman can live free from violence, fear and harm.

Happy Bloomsday!

Bloomsday is a celebration of Irish literature, language and cultural imagination.

But it is also an opportunity to ask whose stories are remembered, whose voices are centred, and whose lives are left in the margins.

Nora Barnacle, whose relationship with James Joyce helped shape one of the most famous works in Irish literature, is often remembered through his story rather than her own. Like many women in cultural history, her influence is acknowledged, but her voice is less often heard.

This Bloomsday, we celebrate the women who shaped Irish literature, culture and public life, including those whose names were recorded and those whose stories were overlooked.

As Soroptimists, we believe that women’s voices matter in every space: in literature, in history, in leadership and in the future we are creating.

Every woman has a story.
Every story has value.
Every voice deserves to be heard.

On 16 June 1963, Valentina Tereshkova made history when she became the first woman to travel into space.

At a time when few women were encouraged to pursue careers in science, engineering or leadership, she shattered expectations and proved that ambition, courage and determination could take women further than anyone thought possible.

More than sixty years later, her achievement continues to inspire generations of women and girls to dream bigger, challenge stereotypes and reach for opportunities that once seemed out of reach.

At Soroptimist International Republic of Ireland, we believe that every woman and girl deserves the chance to fulfil her potential. Through education, mentorship, advocacy and empowerment, we work to create a world where barriers are broken down and opportunities are open to all.

Today, we celebrate not only Valentina Tereshkova's extraordinary achievement, but every woman who has dared to step forward, challenge limits and blaze a trail for others to follow.

Recently, members of SI Dublin had the privilege of participating in Purple Hand Champion Training delivered by Teach Tearmainn, an organisation providing vital support services to women and children experiencing domestic abuse.

The Purple Hand initiative aims to create safe, informed spaces within our communities by equipping individuals and organisations to recognise the signs of domestic abuse, respond appropriately, and signpost those affected to the support services available. The campaign promotes a zero-tolerance approach to domestic violence and helps build a network of safe spaces for women seeking information and support.

A sincere thank you to Teach Tearmainn for sharing their expertise and for the incredible work they do every day supporting survivors of domestic abuse.

This training has provided valuable insights and practical tools that will help us better support women in our communities.

Progress was never simply granted; women organised, resisted and demanded equality.

On this day in 1912, members of the Irish Women’s Franchise League took bold action at Dublin Castle to demand votes for women.

Their protest was part of a wider movement that challenged women’s exclusion from public and political life.
Their courage reminds us that every right we hold today was advanced by women who refused to be silent.

As Soroptimists, we continue that legacy by standing up for women’s voice, agency, civic participation and leadership in Ireland and across the world.

On this day in 1847, Millicent Garrett Fawcett was born in Suffolk, England.

A lifelong campaigner for women’s suffrage, education and equality, she reminds us that progress is built through persistence, organisation and courage. Millicent joined several women's suffrage groups which were writing letters, holding meetings, and lobbying for the vote, becoming President of the largest, the National Union of Women's Suffrage Societies, from 1897 until 1919.

Her work helped pave the way for women’s voices to be heard in public life, politics and decision-making. That legacy continues today wherever women stand up, speak out and lead change in their communities.

As Soroptimists, we believe every woman and girl should have the opportunity to learn, to lead and to shape her own future.
