Irish Wheelchair Rugby have been drawn to play Israel in the European Championship on the 28th of May. The team have voiced concerns over this game with their national governing body, the Irish Wheelchair Association. The Irish team plan to protest the match. One team member, Alan Dineen has confirmed he will boycott the Israeli game stating “I am boycotting the game against Israel because I cannot separate sport from the reality of what is happening in Gaza and Palestine. Through my work fundraising with Aclaí Palestine in the Aida Refugee Camp, I have seen first-hand the impact that occupation and violence have on people’s daily lives. Gaza now has one of the highest numbers of child amputees per capita in the world, with thousands of children having lost one or more limbs. I believe what is occurring constitutes genocide, as described by numerous human rights organisations and legal experts. Sport is a powerful platform that can create social change, and I believe athletes have a responsibility to take a stand when fundamental human rights are at stake.” World Wheelchair Rugby Irish Wheelchair Association Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions (BDS) Movement Ireland Palestine Solidarity Campaign (IPSC) ACLAÍ Palestine
