The Big Question, Do Food Supplements Even Work?!

A nuanced subject with many variables at play.
First and foremost ingredient quality matters

🕵‍♀️We're looking for...

🌿 Non Synthetic ingredients (ideally organic ingredients),

🌿 Free from Artifical Additives, Binders, Colourants or Flavourings

🌿 Food Sourced ingredients (over lab made compounds)

Keeping in mind who owns the brand will majorly influence the integrity of any product!

👩‍🔬 The thought process behind how a product has been formulated is another huge cofactor in its effectiveness on an individual level

Example: is the product a general formulation or is it a targeted formulation for a specific health support (think general multi vitamin v prenatal multi vitamin)

🔬Then there is the matter of bioavailability, two focus points here can be:

1. The hosts gut health will hugely influence the bodies ability to absorb adequate amounts of nutrients from their food & food supplements

Fun Fact: Research suggests the general population only absorbs approximately 20% of any supplement ingested

2. Are the quantities in the supplements meeting the RDI amounts - which tend to be the bare minimum needed to avoid deficiency, and is rarely if ever enough to support optimum health which is why supplementation should complement a healthy, colourful, non-restrictive diet

Which leads us to, is supplementation even necessary?

You can throw a lot of money at random supplements which will have little to no benefit or in some cases may do more harm than good...

💸Something to be mindful of when you see influencers promoting products through paid partnerships (sorry folks, but no green powder alone will heal all your gut issues)

I highly recommend consulting with a GP, Pharmacist, Dietitian, Clinical Nutritionist or Nutritional Therapist before embarking on any supplementation journey. This way you can be evaluated for possible nutritional deficiencies and/or lifestyle factors where food supplementation may be beneficial
