I wanted to ask Dr. Schubiner about the salient network because so many people ask this 👇

“Why can’t I stop focusing on my symptoms?”

The brain is built to notice what feels important, urgent, or biologically relevant.

And if it has learned that pain, movement, food, sleep, or a body sensation might mean danger, it can keep pulling your attention there.

Not because you are failing.

Because your brain is trying to protect you with old information.

CALM MESSAGE OF THE WEEK....
Speaking out loud to your body and expressing your feelings can be a powerful way to help calm the nervous system, especially for people living with chronic pain, stress, anxiety, or illness.

When feelings remain unspoken, the body can stay in a state of tension and protection. The nervous system may continue to interpret emotions such as fear, frustration, sadness, or anger as signals of danger.
By simply acknowledging and expressing what you are feeling can help reduce that sense of internal threat.
Benefits of speaking to your body and expressing feelings:
Creates safety
When you gently acknowledge your experience, your nervous system receives the message that you are paying attention rather than fighting or avoiding what is happening.
Reduces emotional suppression
Holding emotions inside requires energy. Expressing them through words can reduce internal stress and tension.
Strengthens the mind-body connection
Speaking directly to your body helps you become more aware of sensations, emotions, and needs, creating a deeper relationship with yourself.
Activates the calming nervous system
Using a soft, compassionate voice can stimulate the vagus nerve and support a shift toward a more regulated state.
Changes the internal story
Instead of repeating messages of fear ("Something is wrong with me"), you begin creating messages of safety ("I am here with you. We can get through this together.")
Examples:
"Body, I know you're working hard today."
"I notice fear is here, and that's okay."
"Thank you for protecting me."
"I am safe in this moment."
"We don't have to solve everything right now."
Over time, this practice can help reduce the feeling of being at war with your body and foster a sense of partnership. For many people healing from chronic pain and stress-related symptoms, that shift—from resistance to compassionate awareness—can be an important part of recovery.
A simple affirmation:
"When I speak honestly and kindly to my body, I create safety within. As my nervous system feels heard and supported, it can soften, regulate, and move toward healing."

Sometimes the hardest part is not only the symptom..It is feeling like no one can see what it is costing you. 👇

Nora talks about living a double life: having beautiful things happening on the outside, while privately struggling with chronic pain, GI symptoms, insomnia, fear, and constant searching.

That middle place can feel so lonely.

Not fully stopped by symptoms.
But not free either.

Still functioning.
Still performing.
Still trying.
Still suffering.

If you know that place, this conversation is for you.

Comment Nora and I’ll send you the full episode.

THIS WEEK ON TMS ROUNDTABLE RECOVERY! LIVE Q&A: She Recovered From Chronic Pain, CFS, Histamine & Headaches. What Finally Changed?

What happens when your body starts reacting to life itself?

For Grace Secker, chronic pain, CFS, histamine intolerance, debilitating headaches, and nervous system dysregulation became part of her daily reality.

Like many people in this community, Grace tried to understand what was happening in her body. Why was she so exhausted? Why did symptoms keep returning? Why did food, stress, and normal life feel like threats?

Her healing journey eventually led her beyond symptom management and into a deeper understanding of the brain, the nervous system, trauma, and the mind-body connection.

Grace is now a licensed somatic trauma therapist, nervous system coach, and creator of the Mind Body Healing Method. Her work helps people understand why chronic symptoms can persist, and what begins to change when the body starts to feel safe again.

In this live Q&A, we’ll explore Grace’s recovery story, what finally shifted after years of symptoms, and what she now teaches others who feel stuck in chronic pain and chronic illness.

If you’ve struggled with chronic pain, CFS, fatigue, histamine issues, food sensitivities, headaches, anxiety, or symptoms that seem to flare no matter what you do, this conversation is for you.
