Prof. Esther Segal in Podcast Video on "Pioneers in Mycology”
Prof. Esther Segal is Professor Emeritus at the Department of Clinical Microbiology and Immunology at the Gray Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences. She earned her PhD at the University of Bern, Switzerland and a specialization in Medical Mycology from the CDC and the NIH. A Full Professor from 1993, she served as head of the Department. She serves as President of the Israeli Society of Medical Mycology (ISMM), represents Israel at ECMM and ISHAM, and is former Vice President of the International Society of Medical Mycology (ISHAM) and former Treasurer of the European Society of Medical Mycology (ECMM). The research in Prof. Segal's laboratory is focused on areas related to fungal infections in humans and animals, including virulence factors and pathogenesis of fungal infections, therapy of fungal infections, and prevention of infection by intervention within the pathogenic process. Prof. Segal's recent research focuses on environmental fungi in the context of resistance to antifungal therapy. She participated in a large study that was published in 2026 in Nature Medicine. Her publications include a book on pathogenic yeasts, over 20 chapters and reviews in books and review articles, and over 120 research articles. Prof. Segal is also active in educational activities, teaching mycology to medical students, to physicians and laboratory staff, and organizing and teaching mycology in international online courses.
