Alcohol dependence is a common social problem that may be associated with other risk factors and co-morbidities.

Abrupt cessation of alcohol intake may provoke an acute alcohol withdrawal phase that can be difficult to manage. In ordinary medicine, specific pharmacological interventions are used for the management of Acute Alcohol Withdrawal (AAW).

Researchers in India recently explored safe and holistic treatments for AAW with a prospective, observational, exploratory, multicentre trial (2008-2011) to assess the role of Homoeopathy in AAW.

Materials and Methods: Individualised Homoeopathy was given to 112 patients reporting with AAW. The clinical assessment was done for 05 days using Clinical Institute Withdrawal Assessment Scale of Alcohol-Revised (CIWA-Ar).

Results and Analysis: There was a significant decrease in CIWA-Ar mean scores and an increase in quality of life scores (P < 0.001).

The results of this observational pilot study suggests that homeopathy may be helpful in the management of acute alcohol withdrawal. Further studies with a larger sample size and rigorous design are warranted.

"To administer a remedy to the sick because another sick person having the same, or very similar physical signs, had been cured by it, would be unscientific, illogical, un-Homœopathic, and very hazardous. To base our therapeutics upon such physiological observations, would be a return to generalization. We would not, then, take into consideration these striking, singular, extraordinary, and peculiar symptoms which Hahnemann tell us we should be almost exclusively attentive to."

Homeopathy in History...

It is interesting to look back at the comparative duration of pneumonia after various treatments in the 1800s.

When patients were untreated with any medical therapy, the average duration of recovery from pneumonia was 28 days, as compared with 29 days with ordinary medicine prior to the era of antibiotics, and 11.67 days under homeopathy.
