We tell kids to put down their phones and go outside.
Outside to where, exactly?
The parking lot? The apartment corridor? The mall?
Most Indian cities have eliminated the "outside" that previous generations remember.
๐๐ป Playgrounds paved over for parking.
๐๐ป Streets too dangerous for unsupervised play.
๐๐ป Community spaces replaced by gated compounds.
๐๐ป Parks, when they exist, locked or poorly maintained.
Screen dependency isn't just a parenting problem or a tech addiction issue. It's an urban design failure.
Children default to screens because we've built cities where there's literally nowhere else safe, accessible, and interesting to be.
Adults scroll endlessly because we've eliminated third spaces where people used to gather, talk, and exist without consuming something.
The solutions we offer are individual: "set screen time limits" or "take digital detoxes."
But the environment makes those solutions nearly impossible to sustain.
What would change if we designed cities with:
โ Car-free zones where people can actually gather
โ Safe, walkable neighborhoods where children can roam
โ Public parks and community spaces within 10 minutes of every home
โ Playgrounds, sports fields, and open spaces that don't require entry fees
We can't app our way out of a problem created by concrete and cars.
When was the last time you spent an hour outside without a specific destination or purchase in mind?
